How do you stop a tantrum?

I have found the best for my child is to calm myself down, they feed off of your negative energy. And then I talk to her. I say okay, this is what you want? And she starts to listen, and I say, I know this is what you want but mommy cannot get it for you right now. If you will calm down and breath maybe we can talk about when you can have it. Now, this works most of the time, but sometimes it does not. Do you think they should be left alone to have the tantrum, or what is your solution?

i also ignore tantrums. if you try to stop them then you are reinforcing them. if i am home then i'll put him in a safe spot and leave him be until he's done. if we are out and about we will leave and go home.
you cannot talk a child thru a real tantrum. and by paying attention to it you feed this behavior and it escalates next time if you try to ignore it.
