I really think that it is possible to overfeed cats. By that, I mean opening 4-5 cans of food, or more per day. One of my cats, Waffles, is really fat, but she's a big cat anyway. And Columbus's weight seems to be just about right, although I have to monitor his health. He's a little more than 10 years old and has a few health issues. I'll have to take him to the vet for a check-up in a few weeks anyway.

Oh definitely! Water should always be available, and I do let my cats eat as much as they want. Unfortunately, I don't remove the remaining food until much later on --- right before I go to bed. And sometimes, I'll open yet another can when Columbus begs.

well so far ive always let my cats decide when theyve had enough. my cats are very active as i let them go out so i dont try to control the amount they eat. ive actually been trying to get my cat to put on a little weight but she never eats extra...even if i put extra food in her plate she just eats how much she wants and leaves the rest, so i guess it depends on the cat

Oh yes, it's definitely possible to overfeed a cat. I used to have a cat that was chubby and I always kept food in his self-feeder. If it was empty he would freak out, even if it was for a few minutes only. As he grew older he became diabetic, and I'm sure it was because of his weight. I now have 3 cats and they just get a little dry food in the morning and and a can each at dinner time. Their weight is much more normal and I'm hoping they stay healthy.
