The last state admitted to the union was Hawaii. That brought the total to 50 states. The flag has one star for each state. Yes, I am sure.

The flag of the United States consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 U.S. states and the 13 stripes represent the original Thirteen Colonies that rebelled against the British crown. Nicknames for the United States flag include "the Stars and Stripes" or "Old Glory," with the latter nickname coined by Captain William Driver, a 19th-century shipmaster. source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_United_States

Of course, there used to be fewer stars. It's based on the number of states.

50 stars at the moment. If another state gets added to the USA, they'll have to redo the flag to make it 51 stars.

The flag has 13 stripes - how many are red and how many are white? What was the name of the flag that the original colonies flew from 1707 until the American Revolution? What did this flag look like? What did the Grand Union flag look like? Where was it first flown? Find an illustration of the Grand Union flag. The first official flag of the United States was created by resolution of the Continental Congress when it met in Philadelphia. When was this resolution passed? This first flag had 13 stripes and 13 stars. There was no consensus about how those 13 stars should be arranged. On the first offical flag, how were they finally arranged? Who made this first official flag? How many stars and how many stripes did the flag that flew over Fort McHenry and which inspired The Star Spangled Banner have? When did Congress decide to leave the flag at 13 stripes and then just add stars for each new state? (Otherwise, it would have been a really big flag if it had ended up with 50 stripes and 50 stars!) Which star on the flag represents Utah?
