I live in a town where we have a large dogtrack. Many people make thier living from raising dogs, racing dogs, and betting on the dogs-as well as working at the track itself.
Do you think greyhound racing should be banned? Do you think it is cruel to the animals?

I do not feel racing should be banned, and no it is not cruelty to animals. I have owned greyhounds for 10 years, and the claim that they are all put down when done racing is propaganda. I as many others race and breed responsibly, so the dogs can be adopted when they retire. From a fiscal standpoint it would be an unemployment nightmare to shutdown the industry.

Heck yes! Most greyhounds are just euthanased when they're no good for racing anymore. It's disgusting. Sure they might like racing but I'm pretty positive they don't like being bled then put down when they're a perfectly healthy young dog.

I am fairy racing neutral and am an owner of two greyhounds.
There is no doubt in my mind that these dogs LOVE to run. Many greyhounds I know get VERY excited if brought back to the track or even if they hear a starting like noise on TV. Since dogs can't fake enthusiasm and happiness, one would think that they truly enjoyed racing.
Another pro racing concept is that the dogs are the money makers. For the most part, people are not going to beat and harm the animals that make them money. A hurt dog doesn't win races. A scared dog doesn't win races. A well taken care of dog wins races.
On the other hand, I don't know if a racing life is a life for any animal, horses, dogs whatever. I don't think it's always the horror it's made out to be, but I don't think the racing industry is GREAT either.
