I have never gotten a dog from the shelter but both are strays we have taken in and we love them. I did get a cat from the Humane Society and love her. They will put you in a room with the animal and you can see how you interact one on one. I think that is the best way so you know what you are getting. They also have their shots and are fixed so you don't have to worry about those things right away. The best advice I can give is to spend time with your pet before getting it. You really want to know it will fit with your personality. If you have children or any that visit your home it is very important to take them with so you know how the dog acts around children.

I think it is a great idea to get one from an animal shelter. I'm not sure really what you are asking but we found a purebreed lab there and we got our golden retriever/black lab mix there. We got them as puppies so that we could train them ourselves but there are many wonderful dogs in shelters young and old. Just ask if you can spend time with the ones you like before you decide which is best for you - their personalities can be quite different when they are out of the shelter environment.
