massive amounts of medications given to older people

My dad visited the last 2 weeks from Florida, and I was totally shocked at the amount of meds he is on!! He takes 22 pills in the morning and 6 at night. 28 PILLS A DAY! Granted he has health problems (heart disease and diabetic), but come on! Do doctors really need to put these people on so many meds? I asked him what he thought would happen if he stopped taking everything, and he said he was sure he'd probably feel better, but was afraid to not take them. What do you all think?
