I think that you will find differing skill levels as far as computer knowledge goes in any country that you work. I doubt if it is accurate to say that Americans are "dumb" with computers. We have people who are just learning, and being in tech support you will need to be able to come down to their level and deal with them in a professional and respectful manner. There are also Americans who are computer wizards. You will encounter this in any country. It is unfair to label any nationality as "dumb", and you will go further in your professional career as you learn this, especially being in the IT business.

That is because the average American is an operator not a "tech". We operate our cars but most don't know how to fix them or even why they work. We operate cell phones but most don't know how to use half of the features. We get something new and we only learn enough to make it do what we want. So when something goes wrong - No, we don't know the jargon or how one section affects another. You are tech support for Microsoft and you KNOW that system, but be honest - do you know and understand how your car works or your refrigerator? Everyone has their area of expertise, everything else we only know to lesser levels because it is not as important to our day to day lives.

Hey, that's funny. I had to call my ISP one time to ask why they shut off our DSL and when they're gonna fix it and get it up and running again. The lady I spoke to in tech support said that I should've gotten an e-mail and proceeded to ask me if I got that e-mail. Well, genius, how can I check my e-mail if I DON'T HAVE INTERNET ACCESS!! Obviously, it's not just the people calling tech support who are stupid.

Thats a good one.lol.But to answer the thread starter i dont think its nice to stereotype people. You could have another aproach in your topic title.Anyway, its not only the americans but there are other countries too who are not knowledgeable to computers especially when they just got one and do not know about the basic things on computers.I believe my husband is just an average american but he sure knows a lot about computers,he doenst learn it at school but just himself.

LMAO, that's very funny! What I hate about calling Tech Support is being told I need to BUY something else or use the tech support that charges you. Here's my DUMB question, maybe you can answer it? If I own an HP computer and I buy an HP printer, why can't they get along?

Um, this is where I keep most of my thoughts to myself, since you posted an apology, but I just have to say that "knowing everything" can also be placed on those who just like you consider others "dumb" because they have a legit question about something they truely don't understand. With a statement like calling people "dumb", it would really make most think twice about calling your company's "tech support". Just because you have that titled tacked on you, doesn't make you better than the person that is calling. It makes it hard to forgive such statements when nearly on a daily basis I see several statements grouping Americans all into one. Next time choose your words carefully, cause it could end up giving a bad outlook to your company, not just on you.

Well- that is the nature of the beast in your profession. You need to remember that not everyone is a whiz at computers and many people who call you have just gotten a computer for the first time. I can tell you from personal experience that is can be very frustrating talking to a computer tech - often times they come off as very aloof and well, rude (not to say that you are this way)- this could be why many people (not just Americans) act like they "know it all". Luckily I'm pretty good with computers so I don't have to deal with it. My parents are in their 60's and just got their first computer about 3 months ago. it's been really difficult for them to get the hang of it but they always call me for help - you just need to have patience - if you don't it might be time to look for a new job.

comon man whats wrong with you? its your profession to answer dumb questions. people calls for help only when they cant fix it themself. and how in hell u expect everyone has time to waste learning silly computer stuffs? my dad is a busy man and he is damn good in his profession but he doesnt know how to opperate computer! he has complete control over really complecated industrial machines and not knowing computer doesnt mean he is dumb enough. its just he doesnt have enough time to learn computer. we dont learn computer instantly when we buy one for us. and everyone has the right to ask even the most dumbest questions ever coz u have got the job to answer dumb questions. i can fix almost every problem of my computer but i remember the day when i first got my comp it wasnt making any sound and i asked to my cousine what was wrong with it. i was worried enough. he came up and fixed the problem in a twinkling of an eye. mute was check on! u cant call me dumb for that coz i didnt go through it. u cant call americans dumb and honestly indeed its the dumbest question.

You have to understand you are also in customer service. Not all Americans read everything that is included in what they purchased. That also happens with credit cards. They will ask us questions that can be answered in the terms and conditions that they sometimes disregard. They may ask silly questions but serving them is your business, and they will not ask questions that they can answer on their own. Just understand them as people just as they would understand your opinion.

I think its a generational thing, not a geographic thing. I think this generation and the one after it will be extremely proficient with computers since they will have plenty of exposure to computers that the older generations didnt have. There is a certain learning curve for people that are new to computers.

I have dealt with tech support a number of times and my experience has been that they don't really listen to what you're saying. They have gotten so complacent they just automatically assume the caller has no idea what they're talking about. It took me over 2 months, many many hours on the phone, and several different techs, to finally get one who would listen to me and realize the hardware and drivers hadn't been installed for the DVD burner I had special ordered with my new computer. Of course I couldn't install it because the disc's weren't sent with the computer and restore did no good because it wasn't in the restore to begin with. After getting a tech that actually listened I had the restore disc's sent to me and a new DVD burner with install discs sent to me and was up and running in less than a week. My daughter works in tech support for a company and they are taught to start out by asking the caller how much they know about computers so they'll know how to help them better. Yes, there are the totally clueless callers and ones that don't know as much as they think they do but take the time to actually listen to what they're saying and try to speak slowly enough they might be better able to understand you in the future and you might find the job a little less frustrating.

There's an intelligent statement, spelling errors and all. :) If people were all computer savvy you would be out of a job. Tech support people tend to have to follow scripts and just read answers off their computer screens to help people anyways. I have dealt with many techies that have proven that only have their job they have because they can read instruction to help people on the phones. If I were in a job where I thought the people I was suppose to be helping were dumb I think I would get another job.

One reason for this is that Microsoft sofware is not user friendly. You guys create this stuff and expect the world to understand it all. It is not that anyone is dumb, it is that Microsoft does not know how to effieciently teach people how to use their products. Compared to other software, yours is more for the computer-wise and not the average consumer.

As far as the whole world is concerned Microsoft software is tyhe most usefriendly as compared to any other operating system. Any ppl wth an average IQ can easily learn to use Windows and any other Microsft programmes.

I am amazed you call them dumb and you had such a high tech job when your spelling is a some what incorrect. It is what, not wot, and done, not dun, and people, not ppl. I cannot abide text talk at all. So next time you want to call the average American dumb lose the text talk. You know what my be silly or dumb to you might be a darn mine field of information to the poor person you are supposed to be supporting. I don't understand a lot of things, but if I have a problem and I get in touch with Microsoft then I expect the person on the other end to be supportive and if he thinks I am dumb then I don't really care.

Your Not Dumb! These people just think they know everything, Problem is you dont get free training unless you work in the call centers. The only reason they have the jobs that they do is because, American's don't work for cheap and they do. They go threw the same training classes that American's who work in call centers do. They need to Say Thank You instead of criticize without our knowledge they wouldnt have a job much less be able to operate that Computer in front of them. So Sad they were not Taught Any Manners. If you want to know how to Cut and paste look me up Ill be glad to help you.

I used to have an ISP that routed their tech support to India. I could not understand anything that the techs would say to me because of their accents and little knowledge of speaking English. Maybe the people you are speaking too are not dumb but they cannot understand your accent or how you speak. I had trouble understanding your discussion topic because of your in inability to be able to spell and type out full words. Now if you are speaking to people who mainly speak English and speak just the way you typed that post than I can see that your customers may have a hard time understanding you. "the ppl who contacts us are really dumb" Come on now.

Over the world the number of people who have an acess to computer are very few in %. may be 1or 2 5 of the total world population. The ignorance is not alone in the unqualified ordinary person.Even the some what computer trained persons cannot answer many questions pertaining to internet problems.Recently I paid a tidy sum for creating aweb site to on fiem .They promised the moon . but today i find i am not getting feed back from the site and the concerned manager is dodging me.Another case is the noted sify net work.(Satyam info tech for full) The service given by this net work is poorest on record. It has a email net work sify.com. Its in box the provision of putting inward mail into any desire folder is inoperative i ahve requested them to rectify their system instead they give instruction to clear my temporary internet file etc. so be cosoled that the ignorance is also high tech

sorry ajay for what i am writing here. i have also worked as a tech support so to make a statement that the Americans are dumb is uncalled for. For one, if not for their queries, the BPOs will shut down. as many people have already said in this discussion that the computer users may be a school/university student, a full time homemaker, old people trying to learn a computer to name a few.. they are not trained to know everything about a computer. thats where you come in. so i hope you will give atleast some respect to your source of work.

I dont think that they are dumb with computer. I think you have to understand that unfortunately they didnt grow up with this type of technology, and they have put off getting involved in it because for years they thought it would fade but now they are realizing that it's here to stay and are trying to learn it. Unfortunately the Computer companies don't offer free classes, or lessons on how to use there product. I think if they did you would have alot less calls from these people. I use to work for tech support and I do understand the types of calls you get, I would always try to educate them on what they are calling about and suggest some local classes, or even take a little extra time and show them some steps to help keep there computer cleaned up, like cookies, and history, defrag. Look at it as you are teaching someone you care about how to use something they have never seen before. Good Luck!
