We were renting an apt in Bloomington IL from a well known renting agency for almost 5+yrs ....I dont want to give out any names here...when we moved out and the moving out inspection was done. The individual who came for the inspection said the place was kept in a great way and that all seems to be in order. We knew we would not get our deposit back anyway cause this has been the experience of many folks renting from them. Later we get a rude call from the Manager of the agency saying in addition to the deposit we have to pay some more amount to them as we BURNT the counter top in the kitchen. I was just wondering how does one deal with a situation like this??? We have moved almost 300+ miles from there now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. NOTE- We did not burn the counter top or destroy anything else.

We had a similar problem when we moved out of our first apartment. They claimed we owed them over $600 for cleaning and repair. Did you happen to take any pictures? We didn't think to do that and it would really have helped us. You can always try and ask them for receipts showing that they did actually replace the counter top - since you didn't burn it, they should not be able to give you a receipt.
I would suggest that you start keeping a record of who you talk to and when. If you need to contact them, send them a certified letter so you have a record of the contact. Look up the tenant law in your state and make sure they know you're aware of the law. You could also check out a site like apartmentratings.com to see if other people have similar complaints.
Good luck - I know how horrible it is to deal with this!

I would try and get into contact with the Housing Agency in that city. I'm sure there has to be some kind of landlord-tenant code that has been violated. If you have any documentation of the way the house looked before and after you moved out I would keep that handy. I would also ask the rental company to send me pictures of the burnt countertop so that I could see what they are talking about.
Good luck!!
