Warmth at last.

Tonight my thoughts were of the homeless people who call the streets their home. How they seek a warm place to spend the night. We had no heat for over 5 hours tonight. The serviceman arrived a little over 45 minutes ago. The regulator had to be replaced on our gas tanks. Now as our home once again warms to a bearable temperature, I realize how lucky I am. No matter how hard we think we have it, there are others who have it worse. We all need to take time to count our blessings.

Last year in winter our heat went out too. But it went out during a snow storm! One of the coldest days of the season and our heat went out! I was so scared that we would not get a technician out because it was snowing. We had seven children in the house all huddled together in front of the fireplace. :) Which was actually nice. But because of the storm, we had to pay a pretty penny! So I know how you feel!

Makes you want to move south where you really don't have to worry so much about the heat going out.

Hehehehe! That was fun, and really nice...but at the same time it was really cold! I liked huddling by the fire, just not where everyone is shaking in unison! LOL :D

This is a very good statement as many of us are much more fortunate than those who have no place to live, no food to eat, no clean clothes to wear and no family or friends to love or care for them. It is sad that during the really cold or hot months, that many people do not have a place to go. We should also say a prayer for those who are homeless and may they find a way to survive the cold winter.

I'm glad you were able to get it repaired. I saw this discussion about 10 minutes ago and thought "oh aren't you the luck you" I was freezing. So instead of responding, I looked at the thermometer, it had dropped to 62 degrees. Normally it is 66 to 68. This room is open to the rest of the house but has electric baseboard heat. I had it on really low. The rest of the house has steam radiators. Then I checked the thermostat and the temp there was down to 58 but was set for 68. I went and felt the radiators and they were warm but not going. I was panicking because it's only 7 degrees out and really windy. Windchill is -20 Well anyway while I was sitting here panicking the radiator made its pppsssst sound as it's heating up. I fell much better now. I've been thinking about homeless people all day and tonight. It is so bitterly cold out. I stocked my bird feeders this morning and they are 1/2 empty already. I bet those birds were cold out there. The high for today was 13 deg. I'm so glad we both have heat.

That is very true. I think it is a good idea to expose ourselves to natural environs from time to time and work out ways of managing without utilities and services provided by various organisations. It is good to have a kind of log cabin where you should have all amentieas totally in your control. That way you develop thinking processes where working out alternate stratagies becomes a way of life with us.

It was contemplating going to my neighbors until they got it fixed. Luckily it didn't take that long. The temp was at 55, but bearable under the blankets and with the oil heater.

Even being on myLot and reading discussions serves often of a reminder of how much I have. You have a knack for looking at things from someone else's perspective. For some of us this year has been a really rocky road, start to finish, for others it is just a little uphill, with some rough spots. Sometimes it takes a small inconvenience to remind us that for others, inconvenience does not even seem to be the word for it. More likely it is desperation.

Wow. Sorry, that your power went out. And, there is always doing to be someone that is off worse than you. You just have to be appreciative of what you have and not complain...because some people do have it worse than we do! :)

I'm glad you got your heat fixed and I know all too well about what you went through. I just recently ran out of propane and we didn't have the money to get it plus pay the emergency delivery charges. I went almost a week without my main heat. I had two space heaters but if we ran them both on high, the circuit breaker would trip. It went down to 8 degrees one night. It was hard but we managed. I couldn't do dishes either but that didn't break my heart.lol. But I do realize that it could have been worse.

It makes me sad to think of those poor people out in the cold. I hope they are able to take advantage of the shelters. I am working on hats to take to the shelter.

I hope it was not too cold where you live. It is terribly cold here. My thoughts tend to go to the homeless this time of year also and I do have heat. That is the beauty of having a coal stove. We have heat even when the power is off and there is no regulator to tear up. I hope you stay warm tonight. It seems that once I get cold, it takes me days to totally feel warm again.

yes some of us are very lucky indeed to have a warm house to go home to, food on the table, clothes on our back, spare change to spend, and a lot of things that we don't realize that we have, and yet we still sometimes complain of things that are not even important... sad but true...

I live in California and California is supposed to be sunny all of the time, right? Well, thanks to a problem called "Global Warming", the weather here has been very scary. We have never in our lives, as being Californians, seen weather that was this extreme, in one year, before. We are concerned and scared. This last winter, the church I live next to had to open up a homeless shelter more than two weeks in a row. This has not been a good year for the weather in California. The homeless people are going to need secure housing, that or the Insane Asylum Act will have to be introduced, it means putting the homeless in mental hospitals.

It is sad how some people have to live. I heard on a homeless man that was sleeping in the dumpster to keep warm and got crushed when the garbage man picked up the trash. It's sad that people have to live that way.
