I have a couple questions about the star rating. (ok it may end up being more than a couple)
1st) What do the different colors mean?
2nd) What do the numbers mean?
3rd) What causes either of them to change?
4th) Which is better, a lower number or a higher number?

let me try to answer!
1]i think each number is given a particular color!like yellow for 8 and red for 9!
2]numbers just denote rating!it shows ur performance rating!
3]if u r active in this site, the number will increase!otherwise it ll decrease!
4]a higher number is better!

Well I hope someone else has a better answer than me but here goes....
I don't think the colors matter. They just help to differentiate the numbers.
The numbers are a ranking of the quality of your posts.
Again they change with the quality of posts and responces you recieve.
A higher number is best. This means that the quality of the Q&A is good.
If you look to the right of a responce there is + - ! The + is a good rating that you can give - is a bad rating and ! is a complaint, for language, hate, bad things like that. Admin sees these.
I hope this helps.

Well,
First of all, The higher the number you get, the higher will be yours rating.
Secondly, The colors are in relation with the ratings you get.
They change in accordance with the quality of posts you posted.
And Higher number is better, of course.
have a nice day.

I'm not sure but , as far as i can tell I believe it relates mainly to the person responding to your discussion or responses whether they can see the rate system or not plus, this is positive, minus= negative, and exclamation mark = deleted, banned or erased.. comment or discussion. If someone else like their response you can rate their answer or comment to the discussion given, allowing them a chance to have a star as well,.. like the person who starts the topic!

The colour of the star just denote the number and in time I guess we will all come to recognise what each colour means, even though the number if printed inside the star, some people don't have great eyesight. The number is your value to the forum as determined by the quality of your questions and answers and how other members of the forum view you, i.e. good questions and quality responses will rate a positive rating or best response. That is what determined the rating.
The rating can change by either getting a lot of best responses or positive (+) ratings and it will go up. A lot of negative (-) ratings and it will go down, although I would think it would take more than one negative or positive to affect it greatly. Also for cheats, spammers, abusive language etc then members can use the option (!) to report someone else. If this happens a lot, then myLot will deal with it and I would think that if the member is allowed to continue posting in the forum it might affect the star rating.
The higher the rating the better you are seen as being a good contributor to the forum. That does not necessarily mean the number of posts that you make, but the quality of those posts. :)
