Lars Ulrich almost single-handedly brought down Napster as we knew it. The guys that wanted to just play music louder and faster than anyone else turned into money-mongers starting with their 'Black' 'Untitled' or 'Metallica' album... call it what you will.
From that day, I vowed never to buy another Metallica CD... anyone else with me on this?

Nah, I still bought Load and Reload and thought S&M was not bad with all the orchestration and stuff. I agree on you that they're one of the biggest commercial machineries of nowadays and they must thank such thing to Napster, but crap like St. Anger I won't be buying, so they better get off their lazy arses and produce an old school decent album within this year.

I loved S&M and that brings up a good point. That was a 2-disc CD set. I lost a CD in moving from Denver to Orlando... now I have only one disc and have the RIGHT to download the music LEGALLY.
If you have watched the documentary on Metallica you will know and understand why there is going to be no good stuff coming from them ever again. Maybe Jason (Newstead) wasn't burn't out, maybe he was just tired of all the BS.
As for the person that said there were other bands against it. You are right. It was Lars Ulrich and Metallica that was the straw on the perverbial camel's back.
Ahh, the olden days then all they wanted to do was play the fastest, play the hardest, get the girls... now they have emotional baggage, kids,... fans are way down the list.

Imagine yourself painting a picture that you've spent money for oils, canvas and brushes and a considerable amount of time to perfect it. When you finished the painting, someone stole it. How would you feel? They probably felt the same thing.

I'm 50/50 on this one. I think he wasn't very diplomatic about his approach. But on the other hand if someone started dipping or jeopardizing your potential earnings it would suck.

Could you please further explain why it sucked what they did? If anything, it only made them ultimately popular and turned them into an eternal commerically sucessful band, even more than what they already were, of course...

I would be with you on this one because I cannot stand that loudmouthed a**hole Lar Ulrich....BUT he is not the only one in the band. Remember these guys have been at it for years, and have influenced many, many others. Why would I want to destroy them?? I adore metal, and they ARE metal as far as I'm concerned. The only other band that would come close for me (of the "classics") is Megadeth, and of course Mustaine was in Metallica...so there ya go. If everyone banned Metallica we would be ruining their lives, and saying thanks for starting this wonderful metal thing by bringing it out of the underground and into the light.........thanks but we're done with ya, you suck, go away...we've taken what we want and don't need you anymore. I think thats pretty cold don't you????
