In Australia it was once said that "the great Australian dream" was to own your own home. This seems to be getting out of reach of almost all but the very rich these days though. With interest rates and the cost of living rising so much it is nearly impossible to save a deposit for a house or apartment. What is the housing situation like in your part of the world???

Yes, I live in America and most people can pay for their houses in 10-20 years. Granted that's a lot, but they can pay more at any time they want. Although the government has a right to take any property they want with a reason. I forget what it's called though.

There are homes of different prices, but it still is affordable for people to become home owners--though not everybody can afford some of the REALLY lavish ones such as Hollywood actors and actresses often buy.
And there are organizations such as Habitat For Humanity that make home owning a reality for even people who are considered to be in the poverty spectrum.
Some banks will also make financing a home easier to afford so that people who are struggling will be able to buy homes at about what it costs to rent them.
Of course, it's not to the place where everybody is able to do this, but owning a home certainly isn't a privilege limited to the rich and famous.

In my area, the housing market is pretty high, but it's not impossible, thank god! I'm actually hoping to buy an apartment building sometime in the near future. I think it'd be a worthwhile investment, especially with the increased need for rental properties!
