Although I prefer suspense, detective, thriller and horror books, my favorite author is Pearl Buck, author of The good Earth. The reason is that I find her writing eloquent, there is not one unnecessary word in her writings, it flows like water.

I like way to many authors to pick just one. But I always find myself returning to Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" because he describes the traditions and culture of a Nigerian Tribe and shows what happens when people interfer.

I think I would pick JK Rowling because of the richness of detail in the Harry Potter books. They appeal to such a broad element of the population. They are charming and thrilling and interesting and just wonderful!!!
In general I tend to prefer rather escapist fiction. Other favorites are Judith Krantz and Jackie Collins... totally different world from Harry, but so entertaining!
