Climate Change - what are you doing to help?

January 27, 2007 3:13am CST
As everyone knows, cliamte change is having an impact on the entire planet. In America they suffer from increased cyclones and hurricanes, India has drought and floods, Africa has droughts and the UK has floods. So what are you doing to help? Do you recycle? Do you drive a car? What are your best tips for being 'green'? Or do you think that global warming is not happening? So what is your view? Have you seen extreme weather where you live?

I try to do all i can to recycle things i do not want. I put paper, glass, metals and plastics in the recycling bins and take stuff to the charity shops. If there is anything i can use again, i will - such as carrier bags etc. But when you hear the stories that rubbish collected for recycling is shipped of to other countries and dumped - it makes you think "why do i bother?" I use a bicycle to get around whenever i can - usually around town and to get to work. I only use the car when going further afield. I turn the tv off completely when i am not watching it - not leaving it on standby. I try not to use the tumble drier too often as this uses alot of electricity - hanging clothes outside is far greener. all the best

That's excellent, you are really putting some effort into it. Don't you find that clothes always smell fresher when dried outside rather than in the tumble drier?

I'm not 100% convinced about Global Warming as there have been natural climate cycles since the earth began. However, I still do what I can to recycle. I walk for miles and often do things on foot instead of jumping in the car. I also use energy efficient appliances and light bulbs. I think we all have a small part to play, as individuals, in trying to make the earth and out local community a better place to live.

There is certainly a natural cycle of warming and cooling. The problem is that during this cycle there is a big difference - the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is much higer than ever before. Putting the green issue aisde it makes sense to be energy efficient as the UK and US have to rely heavily on imported oil and gas. This in turn creates a security issue. Well done for doing your bit, I often find a walk to be a refreshing change from driving anyway!

I personally don't believe in global warming. The world is old, and we don't live in a perfect world - bad things are going to happen. Every time they say global warming is at its worse, a blizzard like cold spell hits dozens of countries. Almost like God is laughing at our notions. However, just because I don't believe in global warming, doesn't mean people should have carte blanche to do whatever they want. Big corporations have way too much leeway in where they dump their chemicals. Too many costly oil spills still happen, and on a local scale, I'm really tired of seeing people throw their trash wherever they want to! I recycle paper and cans, walk when I can (I have health problems), and use light bulbs that Al Gore would for sure approve of. It's just too bad I don't care fo Al Gore. So whatever you do believe in or don't, use your head! We live on this earth and are in charge of taking care of it - act accordingly!

Our planet is certainly getting warmer, its a proven fact. The only question remaining is what are we going to do about it? It's good to hear that even though you don't believe in global warming you are still doing what you can to look after our planet. We only have one planet and we should be taking care of it!
