Being Catholic what does it mean to you?

I was born and raised a Catholic, Christened, made my Holy Communion and I chose to be confirmed. I live by the law of God and not by the law of Catholics.
There are many things about the Catholic church I will never agree to. If I needed to take contraceptive medicine then I would, if I fell in love with a divorced man they would be with him and if my child did not want to go to a Catholic school or practice my religion I would not force him. Does this mean that I will go to hell?
Well I used to think that being Catholic was the be all and end all of everything, and the one true religion but now I realise that all religions should be valued, respected and understood.
There is no one supreme religion that governs all, we are all together in one the Divine. What ever religion we where brought up to worship, or what ever religion we have have discovered the ONE unites us all under the ONE Universal Belief.
No matter what you call the ONE it is still the ONE universal being that we can all call upon. Be he God, or be she God, be this God, God, Allah, Jesus, Buddha, Yeoha [Johava], who ever that one God may be that is where our focus for peace should be.
That will then be true ecumencalism. So then we can all believe in the ONE and walk about the earth happily and free to be who the ONE Divine being wanted us to be.
At least thats my opinion :D

just stick to being a good person. whether you practice religion or not doesnt matter. if there IS a big guy up there he/she will see and i'm sure you'll be rewarded. if not then at least you'll have brought some sunshine into peoples lives.

I totally agree with you, it is true it is not necessary to practice religion, just being a good person is good enough for the Big Guy lol I like that, but to save people getting unhappy as to whether it be a Big Guy or Gal, I just say the Divine.

being a catholic means following Jesus Christ with all of my heart. Its about being faithful to him and obey all of his commandmends. Well, if you want to follow Christ, you are not allowed to be half hearted cause GOd does not want us to follow Him half hearted, HE rather that you follow this world full hearted or follow God whole heartedly. See, so do you choose GOd or the world, You cannot chose both. Bring people to God are our jobs here in the world. If we really pray and actually try hard. People will join GOd. If people cant be taught by words then you have to pray for them. and IF you have a strong will. God have thousands of way and alternatives to bring that person to believe in Him. So nothing is impossible for GOd.

so I must be half hearted then, and in this should I give up being Catholic just because I refuse to follow what the Pope has layed down. Or will God see my struggle all the sweeter because of my strong beliefs in the health and safety and general happiness of each individual upon this earth.

religion is only a word that separate us to loving someone. God want us to love one another same of god give to us..dont to judge each others. thats not our rights...God is the only one who can judge us.

you are both absolutely right, in my opinion, live a good life take care of others, harm no one and you have just as good a chance as anyone else does entering those "Pearly Gates" or the hereafter.

I too am a catholic and I dont believe in some of the rules or demands they put on us. I use to go to church all the time when I was younger not because I wanted to but because I had to. So now I dont go I will only go now if I want to. I believe you dont have to go there to pray you can do that in the comfort of your home.

I agree with you Terry, I go because I want to go, not because I am afraid that I will be condemned to the fires of hell. Of course I was brought up to believe that I will go to hell if I do not follow my religion and its laws to the latter.
It makes me laugh sometimes, one day the Priest announces that God is loving and forgiving, the next he tells us if we do not repent we shall burn in the fires of hell.
I think I will spend an eternity in purgatory for this post.

before anything else i would like to state here that i am not catholic and would never ever even want to be one.. for one thing catholic teachings has MANY flaws.. not just one! and people just ignore this or let it pass and just say it's already a tradition and part of culture. note: not all traditions and culture practiced are right and morally correct! God is against paganism.. worshipping a THING.. trying to represent a god is a form of paganism. actually let me correct that -- it is the very essence of the religion paganism. God never said "if you want to serve me don't marry" yeah yeah.. the priests would say it's because of their undying love that they choose to love God and give up marriage. but let me INFORM you -- it is said in the bible that the true anti christ will teach people not to get married. well it didn't say all the people it just said it will teach people.. aren't priest people? another thing?? why do you call priests "father"? don't you know that God said that He is the only one that you should call father aside from the father that you have biologically. get your facts straight. another thing, God is not against CONTRACEPTIVES. God is against abortion. There is an obvious distinction of the 2. Get this!! it's said that the REAL anti-christ will have a 666 on it's forehead. READ THIS REVEALING TRUE FACT. it's said in the bible it's on the FOREHEAD. NOTE: ON THE FOREHEAD! not written on the forehead or marked on the forehead or even born with the 666 on the forehead. just said ON THE FOREHEAD. GUESS WHAT? The hat that the Roman Catholic pope wears has something written on it. if you take all the ROMAN NUMERALS THERE AND CONVERT IT AND ADD IT UP YOU WILL GET THE "666"... The very hat that the pope wears has 666!! and where does he put the hat? it's on his head.. and where is the writing? it's on the hat!! another false doctrine from the said church? believe me there are tons!! Jesus was never born on December 25! and never will this ever be a fact! it was only AGREED by the ROMANS to declare it as such TO HONOR THEIR SUN GOD!! NOT TO HONOR JESUS! yet.. christmas as they say is there to honor jesus when in fact it is based on lies.. and just had been pass thru generations as a tradition and as a practice and not as of to honor as they would have put it.. to remember Jesus. before anyone will send me messages about this post check this with the bible. God bless us!

Wow, I find this very interesting, now is this the Catholic Bible I should read or the King James Bible because both versions differ in their interpretation of the truth.
I often wonder how true the bible is, or what version is true and which is not. Should I learn hebrew and read the original hebrew? who knows. Its a book and most of the stories in the book are stories, parables, told to explain Gods wonders to people who had no notion of science.
Yes you make some very valid and interesting points.

very interesting :) but don't forget that the Saints arrived after the Old Testament, the first was Saint Joseph and Saint Anne, then of course all of Jesus's apostles became Saints, Peter and Paul, Thomas, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and of course Martha and Mary Magdalene, Veronica and countless others, oops! John the Baptist.
I think it was St Dominic or discovered the rosary, and Our Lady appeared to him and asked him to pray, and he created the rosary.
Now you see in the King James Version and Protestant and Anglican church, Our Lady is the Mother of Jesus, end of. She is only mentioned now and again.
Where as in the Catholic religion she is the Mother of the Church, personified in many ways.
I could go on for ever :D

I suppose your view point is polytheism. But I think there is only who governs the whole kingdom of the spiritual being. He is the one who created the entity of the universe.

To me..being Catholic is my life and I believe it is belonging to the Church founded by Jesus who told Peter that "the gates of hell would not prevail against it"
Because I love my faith I have a website: http://www.littlefanciscan.com
I keep daily mass reflections there..
I need to create a page for catholic links..so if you have some good catholic websites email them to me at littlefranciscan@suddenlink.net

I am not a catholic but a Hindu and I believe that It's not the religion that that should be given Importance instead it's the God and it's people who should be given importance in life because there are many religions but one God and we are the children of the same God.

You should just follow what you believe in, look at me for instance, I was born Christian and I've gone to church maybe five times in my life. I'm not very religious and in fact I feel that people take it to seriously. I'm no longer Christian but more agnostic to the point where I just believe in one god and I feel as long as you believe in something you will live on in the after life. You only have one life to live and I feel that too many people get caught up in what's going to happen to them in their next life, no one knows so just do what you feel is best for you.

I agree with you. I was born raised a catholic, went to catholic school up until high school. while i think that the intentions are good, there are many vatican laws that seem to deviate from the original purpose of the Church. if you by chance do the wrong thing in their eyes you are going to hell. just seems convienent for the human powers that be.

yes, exactly! Guess what in fifty years time, they will probably accept women taking contraception in the Catholic Church and perhaps Women will be Priests now that would be something. :D

It sounds as if you've come to some of the same conclusions that I have. I was also raised Catholic but there are so many issues I have with some of the doctrine that I have not been able to pracice in the traditional way (going to church, following a strict interpretation of the rules) for a few years now.
I think that your approach is much more accepting of all the others in the world who are not Catholic. I have a better sense of spirituality than I ever had at this point.

totally agreed. i started to realize that at a young age when i had more questions for the church then they were giving me answers. now, i still consider myself a catholic/christian, but don't go to church to worship. lately, i've been realizing more of the truth from history.

I agree with you. I was raised as a Catholic, forced to go to church every Saturday evening until I was eighteen. However, there are so many practices of the Catholic church that I don't agree with either. If all of their preachings are correct, then I for one am going straight to hell, as I have had a child out of wedlock, I have taken birth control and I have lived in sin. I also got married in a different church and refused to pay a priest to come witness what the minister did, that just seems foolish to me. I believe in God, and I believe in Heaven and Hell, but I do not believe God would punsih me for taking birth control when if I had gotten pregnant I couldn't have afforded to raise the child. I believe God loves us all and I believe if we try our best to do our best that is all He expects from us.

I was brought up a catholic, i recently married in a catholic church and my children attend a catholic school but...i don't believe in half the stuff the church believes in.
Contraception should not be a mortal sin. Why bring a baby into the world that you can't afford to look after??
Divorce i personally believe should be avoided, simply because its a commitment for life but people change and would god want us to stay in a relationship to feel unloved and unwanted???
Confession is between you and god why should you need to have a middle man telling you how to repent?
I don't go to mass very often. If i need to be close to god i will be where ever i am in the world. I do not need to go to church for that.
Lately i ahve felt at a loss with catholicism and i am questioning myself if i want to continue to be part of it.

I agree with your comment that religions should be valued, respected and understood. I too was baptised and am a Catholic. To my mind, religion should be about respect and coming together. One religion should not nesecessarily be regarded as more authoritative than another. Unfortunately we see many cases throughout history by which religion is a means of difference, and difference is therefore a cause for conflict. I do not find myself a proud catholic, in fact I think I would prefer to be referred to as spritual. As the destinycole said, there are many things about the Catholic church that she would never agree too, I agree with that, from Contraception, to homosexuality, to the acceptance of women in high ranking roles. Religion should not be forced upon people, everyone should be free to choose.
