The Reason Behind FF7's Success

among all the series of squaresoft's final fantasy, FF7 is the most popular, specially to those who have been playing since the older series from ff1 up to the later ones. even now, no game has ever broken the big sales record in Japan and abroad. i believe, the reason behind this is not just the story, the gameplay or the CGs(which was great considering it was released on PS1 which has limited graphics enhancement). i also believe it was because of the numerous "game secrets/rumors" that has engulfed the players and fanatics who played the game... as an example, there was a rumor that you can revive Aeris (Aerith) using the white materia... me and my friends have played the game over and over again trying to find a way how to do that... another one was the rumor that Tiny Bronco (your vehicle before the airship) could fly if you could get a certain item as a price while playing minigames at the Flying Saucer... and you know RPG players, the more secrets unraveled, the more we enjoy the game, right? How about you guys? Why do you think FF7 had that impact on you?

too bad FF7 was released in PS1... the new generation of players won't be able to see the reason behind FF7's popularity back then... i hope squaresoft remake it in PS3... remake, as in all of its graphics but not the story... that would be nice, i think ^_^

well, it's backwards compatible but if you do that, you'd still be playing it on a not-so-fine graphics... it'd be nice if they could remake it with fresh graphic arts, wouldn't it?

I played FF games since the very first one, and I think the reason that VII is so important is because it was a major turning point in the series. It was on a new console, it was in 3D, and the story was far more immersive than anything that had come before it. Also, the setting was much different as well... rather than a fantasy theme the series took a more sci-fi direction. On a bit of a side note, the Aeris scene was truly the saddest scene in video game history.

Before everything, you are rated for the topic :)! ----- as for the subject. FF7 is the 2nd game I like in the FF series because FF8 was too special for me, for some reason. anyway, For FF7, the... the plot, it was too dark and too fascinating to leave it alone. It had a unique music and characters, and alot of surprises and drame scenes (aerith =

Yeah, I remember the rumour about reviving Aerith. It is so popular back then, even myself almost believe it, until I read a statement from Square themself that there is no such thing. I think one of the reason why Final Fantasy VII is so successful, is because this is the first Final Fantasy installment for Playstation. Final Fantasy series has been well-known widely especially in Japan, and for their favourite series to be released in Playstation would be a valuable moment indeed. And Final Fantasy VII is the second Playstation RPG I played, after Beyond The Beyond. I played it many times, just to see the dating scene with either Aerith, Tifa or Yuffie. :D And I still remember how I trained my characters for a long time, just to fight against Emerald Weapon. Darn using the conventional method (Knight of the Round, Final Attack, Phoenix, etc) was too time consuming. I should have used the easier way instead, man that was too easy. :D

FFVII was a major turning point in console RPG with its graphics, that's one reason behind its success. But even now that it's graphics is outdated it has stand the test of time because of the remarkable characters and unparalleled Materia system.

yap... i think the materia system was the best battle system ever used by Final Fantasy... that's one thing i love about Final Fantasy... every series has its own unique battle systems

Part of Final Fantasy VII's big success is that it was the first 3D Final Fantasy game. The franchise was all ready big so of course that helped. I think buzz marketing helped as you say, with the rumors. The game itself made a big impact on me. I use to only play the occassional game here and there like Vectorman for the Sega or Turok and Star Wars Pod Racing for the N64. When I played FFVII (PC version) I was immediately hooked on a game with such an in depth story and characters. I was one that loved to write stories and novels so for me to see for the first time a game with a deep plot captivated me from the start. The game not only made me love RPGs, it got me into moving beyond that and loving MMORPGs and the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole. It was the first FF game I had ever played. On top of that, FFVII made me think of writing in a whole new way. I now am considering writing game scripts and movie scripts on top of my novel (book writing). This game had a possitive impact on me beyond just being a gamer. It made me think of writing on a whole new level. I saw how much dialog writing was required for the game, besides just a regular platformer.

For me the mix of personalities of the different characters is what made it successful.plus FF7 featured a world that when seems so boundless and limitless in things that you can do. When I first played the game my goal was to finish it as fast as I can, but as I played it I noticed that there are lots of things to do, and the graphics are not that bad at all so that made the entire experience worth the time that I spent.

I get the impression that just so much work went into it, that it had to be successful. The graphics are bad, but I think the plot was so strong it didn't matter what it looked like. The game had so many morals of friendship and love, even though its not real, its very close to human life. All about values. but... why would anyone want to bring Aeris back? she was annoying .
