Not sure I follow what transpired that was scam. I am skeptical of the obisco anyway since from Africa and possibility of asking for money! So what did he ask for from you? Who was on tv, mylot or African bank thing? Am unclear. Appreciate you bringing this to our attention!

Willowlady, there are a lot of scams that have been going around similar to this for years now. They usually come from Nigeria, but recently I've seen more from other parts of Africa as well. If you want to read more about it check out this link: http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/nigeria.asp

Thanks for the link bungirl.
Willowlady, it was the scammers that made the news not mylot. It is very common and shows no sign of letting up. These people ask you to help them get money out of thier country. They have a good sob story to go with it. There is always a bank transfer fee and once you pay it you never hear from them again.

This has been going on for a very long time. I knew a nice couple that worked at an airline with me about 7 years ago. By the time they told me about this 'great' opportunity, they had already sent the $5000.00 to a guy in Africa:(
I told them it sounded like a huge scam, but they were aminent that is was legit....Until they were informed by the government that they would never see that money again.
Why can't people just get a job?!?!?!?!?

Sad thing is there are people out there that fall for this. We run a western union here in town and have had several people come in to wire money all over the world, because of someone going to come live with them and marry them or they won the lottery etc......

These scammers are sending emails like this every day, they should be punished and arrested. I've read nothing can be done to them because they reside out of the US. Come on, with online technology they can easily find out who the scammers are and take action.

Thanks very much for pointing this out AskAlly and also for reporting it to myLot. Let us all hope that they do something about this sort of thing as it is no different to the other scammers who come here. I would say that this person chose the wrong member to send the message to in the first place and I wonder if they are working alone or in concert with others. How on earth could they actually think that they could get away with it is one of the things that I am wondering.
Of course there are some gullible people around who actually do send their personal information through to these scammers, but I think they are people who are not at all worldlywise or perhaps a little greedy.
Bravo Zulu AskAlly for a fine job in exposing this sort of thing. :)

I got suspicious when his points did not go up even before I replied to his friends request. He just had an avatar and 0 posts. I wonder how many other friends requests he made? MyLot got rid of him quickly, because I do not even see the pm in my message list anymore.

Giggles, they just keep on trying don't they ...!
Mind you I have actually been to Ouagadougou, Burkhina Faso (luckily it was in a nanosecond between wars) .. it's a pretty bleak place, I bet all the income the government of the day gets goes on arms and nice palaces for the President, and if I lived there I'd be doing all I could to get away too ..

Sorry about that!!

Hi Ally...unfortunately, these Nigerian scammers are everywhere on the Internet...even surprisingly in fee-for-services products. Anyhow, here's how one person had a fun at the scammer's expense: http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/sfo/78395856.html The person who had fun messing with the scammer used the characters from the TV show or movie "Duke's of Hazzard".
