Do you really take advantage of 24-hour shopping?

Where I live, we don't have 24-hour shopping. The latest the stores stay open is 10PM (or possibly 11PM) and that is *only* for grocery stores. Department or retail stores are never open later than 9PM and, on weekends, they close at 5PM. Whenever I'm in the U.S., I see so many stores that advertise they are open 24 hours. I have American friends and colleagues that have mentioned, in passing, that they had to run out to Wal-Mart in the middle of the night for diapers or cold medicine or what have you. This is mind-boggling to me... and seems like such a convenience. If you have access to 24-hour shopping, do you actually shop at "off hours"? Do you work shift work and find this to be a necessity? Or, do you still shop during "regular business hours" because you just don't need that much access?

Hi thinkingoutloud, We only have the one grocery store which is open 24 hrs. I have not had the need to use it through the middle of the night yet, but I think that it would be beneficial for the people that work on different shifts.

Hey there safetyguru! :) Long time no see! I'm still waiting for us to get a grocery store like that.. I'm generally a night owl and I could easily see me making a late-night dash to the store, rather than waiting until the hustle and bustle of regular business. I hate wasting time standing in lines!

i hear your please and i sympathise with your needs, but the way the movers and shakers are going, i think you stand a better chance moving.

The ONLY reason that I take advantage of it is because there are times when I can't get my brain to shut off at night. When this happens and if I know that I really need to do a bit of grocery shopping anyway, yeppers, I get into my car, drive to the Walmart - and I wish someone would tell me how to stop shopping there - and shop. It is so quite at 2:00 in the morning - no customers and so easy to find what you are looking for. The only drawback is that most of the workers are busy stocking and have many of the aisles blocked and that makes it difficult to get your carts around them. Not only that, there is very little traffic on the road at that time of night, so it makes for an almost stress-free drive. I always take a cup of coffee with me though to make sure that I stay awake!~Donna

I'm one of those "can't always get sleepy" people too, Donna... that's why I'd love to be able to have somewhere to go and do something productive, like getting my grocery shopping done. I end up working or posting online because it's not like I can haul out the vacuum at 2AM LOL I'll have the whole house awake!

in a 24 hour shopping internet provide consumers with a broad selection of products and services, increased information and enhanced convenience, operate with reduced overhead costs and greater economies of scale; frequently adjust featured selections, editorial content and pricing, providing significant merchandising flexibility, "display" a larger number of products than traditional retailers at lower cost

We have 24-hours convenient stores here in UAE. It's really nice to have these kind of access. Aside from saving lots of time standing on a traffic jam in daytime, off-peak hours gives me the comfort to roam around the store without bothering for crowded shoppers.

Yes I have in Nevada. I used to work 5pm to 3am and my sister and I would go to Walmart after work... it's nice to be able to go when you feel like it or have things you really need. Most grocery stores there are open 24/7 and Walmart is a cool place to have because they seem to have everything you need at low prices. Less people too at wee hours.

When we use to have 24 hour grocery stores, we would go. There would be a good number of people in there. A lot of people who work nights or get off at weird times like to shop in the wee hours of the morning. When I lived right outside of an Army base 11pm on the night before pay day the 24 Walmart would be pack because people who grocery shop and know money was in their accounts at midnight. I love shoping at midnight or later. The stores aren't as crowded and you get done quicker.

I live in a college town and most places here are at least open until 2 a.m.,a couple roceries stores are 24/7 and donut shops, and a diner.Yes, sometimes when we are just not tired and feel like some food or a movie to rent, we do go out in the wee hours, it's great, pretty quiet.

That's what is so funny about where I live... bars and clubs are open until 3 or 4AM, our corner stores are usually open all night, our McDonald's is 24 hours, there's always a gas station open, but you can't get medicine or other possibly urgent items anywhere at all. I wonder if that says anything about our priorities??? LOL

I can't tell you how much I love Wal-Mart and 24 hours. Although I would never go alone because there are some freaks that come out at night that don't make you feel too safe, it's the best time to shop, because you don't have to deal with lines and in most cases, they're starting to stock in the night time and you get the first selection of the new stuff after midnight. And when you work all day, it's much easier to get to a place that's open after 5 simply because most people work 8 to 5. And I know lots of people who would rather sleep during the day and work into the evening because they can get more done that way. I'm such a night person, period - if places aren't open, i get frustrated because most of my energy comes during that time. So I LOVE the convenience of 24-hour shopping - which makes the internet awesomem, too *grin*.

Actually, one other thing about this is the convenience of being in school. Because I do a lot of my work in the evening, if I suddenly need something while working on a project for school or work, it's awesome to be able to go out and get it in an emergency. I've had this happen MANY times.

UGH! I can't tell you how many times my kids have waited until after 5PM on a Sunday to tell me they need a poster board or markers or some kind of project materials!! I have gotten to the point where I keep a small stationery store in my office at all times because of it! LOL I would DEFINITELY love 24-hour shopping for things like that... it would save my sanity ;)

*laugh* that would kill me, too. The great thing about 24 hour walmarts is the fact that you don't have to cut off an arm or a leg to pay for the supplies you need suddenly. Usually in smaller towns, the only place open is a gas station or something, and it will cost you $10 for a box of 16 crayons :). But then I'm also an advocate for mom and pop shops - because places like walmart really are killing those places...but that's another discussion for another time :).

Oh where we live we have 24 hours shopping in some shops not all shops are open 24 hours though, and a lot of times when we run out of something then we do go to the shop to buy what we need, and more people work different hours today so that is why they are trying to open more shops so that more people can have more convenience with their shopping. but mainly I will try and shop at the regualar times as I prefer shopping in the day.

Yes, I love shopping between the hours of 2am to 6 am @ Walmart. I used to work overnight there and it's usually busy all the time but usually by 2am the midnight shopping crowd is gone. By 6 am the early morning crowd starts showing up. I can't stand shopping at Walmart any other time.

My husband and I have pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot an hour before closing time and looked at each other saying, "What on EARTH are we THINKING?!" LOL

We hardly patronize the 24-hour shopping thing. Emergencies occur though, but these are ably answered for by pharmaceutical stores and the hospitals. Don't you agree with me that it is always best for our health that we sleep during the odd hours? I am not sold to the idea of having to sacrifice the best hours of sleep for a shopping exercise.

I do almost all my grocery shopping online with Asda or Tesco. The nearest Asda to me is open 24 hours but I hate grocery shopping so avoid it at all costs. Much nicer to sit at my pc with a cup of tea shopping! The only time I've ever shopped in person "out of hours" is if I'm on a long car journey or something like that. I've popped in to a 24 hour Asda store in the early hours of the morning a few times but I have to say I don't know how it pays them to stay open all night - every time I've been in it's been just a handful of people shopping. I'm in the UK by the way.

I've done groceries online a handful of times too... I rather enjoyed it :) The only thing I didn't like is not being able to make "hands on" choices for produce or meat. But, for canned goods and the like, it's amazingly convenient. Doorbell rings and there are all your items! :)

In our place there is no such thing called midnight shopping round the year but on special occasions and holiday period some shops will come up with this midnight shopping where will huge discounts on clothes in particular. There will be around flat 50% discount on some. At that time, I will not miss those and go on a shopping spree without fail every year.

Oh yeah, that's when my husband and I shop, Friday or Saturday nights around midnite to 1am...they are stocking the shelves so you get the freshest stuff and most of the time the kids who are out playing around aren't in the grocery section, they are in the toys being juvenile.

yes I love to go shopping late at night, the only thing I dont like is at night time the shops are busy filling all the shelves so theres less shoppers to bump into but more workers!

It helps to know which nights are truck nights. I used to work as part of the night stock crew at our grocery store. I was the cashier and helped out where I could with stocking shelves when it got slow. The trucks came in 3 nights each week. It was hard on shoppers on those nights because there were a lot more workers plus pallets of grocerys all over the store that were being stocked. These nights were not good nights to be shopping.

We don't have it around here either. We have one supermarket that stays open to 11. Wendy's and McDonald's stay open to 11 as well - later in the summer months. Other than that, everything else closes early, some as early as 6 PM! All the outlet stores close at 6 PM. Not even CVS or Rite-Aid are open past 9. It's a problem sometimes. We have one gas station that has a convenience section that's open all night. Other than that, you are out of luck. I do miss that difference between where I used to live and here, although sometimes living in a sleepy little town is nice.

Oh, and I would shop the off hours to a certain extent since I work the 11 PM to 7 AM shift. A lot of times I stop at the grocery store to buy food on my way to work. I have, in the past, gone food shopping in the morning as well. I like this because the stores aren't crowded and they often have early morning specials on meat that are gone later in the day. Where we used to live I would go for a walk for exercise early in the morning and often stop at CVS early in the morning if I knew something needed to be picked up.
