Malaysian food can be separated in three different cuisines.About 70% of the Malaysian population is Malay, about 25% is Chinese and the rest is mainly Indian. These 3 cultural groups have each their own styled cuisine.

I am not from malaysia.I have been there.Malaysian food preperation and taste is similar to kerala food of south India.Prepared in coconut oil and palm oil.All food is almost the same.
Look at the same malaysian recipe from Kerala:
AVIAL
(South Indian Vegetables with Yoghurt) -
A smooth tasting vegetarian dish
Ingredients
1 1/2 lb mixed vegetables
4 fresh green chilis, halved lengthwise
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp tumeric powder
1/4 tsp cumin powder
1 cup freshly grated coconut (or 2/3 cup desicated coconut)
4 - 6 shallots (or 1 small red or brown onion)
1/2 cup plain yoghurt
Let's Cook
Cut vegetables into cubes or slices. Combine with chilis, salt, tumeric and cumin. Add
just enough water to prevent the vegetables from drying out. Cook uncovered in a well-
oiled wok or skillet until just cooked.
Pound fresh coconut with shallots in a mortar/pestle or food processor. Add to
vegetables with yoghurt. (If you are using desicated coconut, add to yoghurt with
pounded shallots and then add to vegetables). Serve.
I make this.Apart from that eating in banana leaf and banana chips are all the same.
Even mlaysia has similar looks to kerala in everyway including climate.

I'm not Malaysian, but I have been travelling all over Malaysia. The best food in Malaysia is endless to say. I noticed every state have their own speciallity. Like the saying goes, if you are in Kelantan, you must have nasi kerabu. In Melaka, must try Asam Pedas Melaka (ya it's different from other part of Malaysia). When in Penang, the must try is CharKway Teow and Penang Laksa. While in Trengganu, enjoy yourself with Keropok Lekor. When visiting Sarawak, don't forget Laksa Sarawak and Ikan Asin Terubuk. The list can go on and on ...but my most favorite is the oyster omelette at Uptown Damansara and kueh Paiti at Chicken Rice Stall.
