when light travels for 1 year in space is called light year.
we cannot measure light in terms of meters ,kilometers or miles .light travels at a speed of 299,792,458 m/s.imagine for 1 second it goes at that speed . so we calculate the speed of light at light years to avoid complications.

Sun light take approx. 8 minute to reach earth.
