I grew up on a farm just north of Elizabeth City, NC. I've posted a few pictures from the 1960's era that shows how my home town was. Its changed a lot over the years and many of the landmark buildings are no longer there. But all in all it still has the air of small home town and retained much of its orginal charcter.

Hi, I've never been to Elizabeth City, but living in Norfolk I hear about it a lot. You have inspired me to go down and visit someday. I love the "Hampton Roads" area, the mix of historical and contemporary. Thank you for sharing the pictures!

you really should. The local Historical Society has a small office there and my mother was one of the many who helped get it started there many years ago. She pasted away in 2001 but had not been active in it for the last 8 or 10 years but was in years past. elizabeth City has some history that few are aware of such as the hous of black beard and several local historical sites.

Elizabeth City is on US highway 17, its about 40 miles south of the Virginia sate line on US17. In years past you had to pass directly thru town on 17 going South, but now days there is bypass and have to exit to reach the downtown area.

My family moved around a lot. Two of the places I lived as a child were Wilson and Goldsboro, NC, in th 1950s. Are they near Elizabeth City? Both are in eastern NC. I still have many relatives south of there in Whiteville and Lake Waccamaw, NC, north of Wilmington and in the vicinity of Cape Fear, but inland. I have wonderful memories of NC. The best barbeque in the world is eastern Carolina pulled pork with the simple vinegar sauce. I still like to go to Parker House when down there, just as I did 50 years ago. Barbeque and hush puppoies and corn sticks! Yeah! And you can forget about the nasty sticky reddish stuff the foist off on you here in the north! I consider Philadelphia my home, quite different from our farm, as it is the 5th largest city in the nation.

Yes you are right about the barbeque pork is famous for its taste. They even had a recent show on the travel channel about the barbeque pork there. And if you haven't been to outdoor fish fry this area and the Outerbanks are the place to be for fish, hush puppies and coldslaw. Elizabeth City is only about 30 or 40 miles from VA stateline in Northearn corner of NC and 35 miles line of sight over the sound from Kitty Hawk. Wilson is west of it and Whiteville and Wilmington are south.
