I ran across this article on google and found it interesting. It was about the number of viruses and grems that lurk around in the kitchen. It focuses mostly on the kitchen sponge and how the are more than a million bacteria on a a sponge. Thats a lot of bacteria on a small surface. There was some research done and they said that if you microwave the sponge for 2 minutes it will kill 99% of the bacteria. I would bet that most people do not do this and keep there sponges for more than a week. Do you throw your sponges out after a week? Do you think you will start microwaving your sponges? Read the article and let me know. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/health/bal-hs.sponge26jan26,0,4857791.story?coll=bal-health-headlines

Hello. I used to use sponges, but I haven't recently. They do get to stinking pretty badly and I have tried washing them and it doesn't help much. I have never thought to put one in the mocrowave though. That doesn't sound to sanitary either really.

According to the study it is sanitary. It kills about 99% of the bacteria on the sponge. It can heat the sponge up to 197 degrees F.
