The power of a badge

Why is it that some cops think that they are better people because they have a badge and the right to wave a gun around? I have met and heard so many stories of cops(regualar ol people like me and you) break the law or do just ridiculous things that us citizens would get a ticket or jail time get completly off the hook because they are in law enforcment. it seems only the really bad things get noticed but there are every day occuriances where cops speed or run red lights(and im not talking about when there on duty chasing someone) and dont get cited for it. A lot of officers think they are better and above everyone else and can get away with whatever they want. Its horrible. im not against cops(my uncles a sheriff) but there are so many unfair cops out there.
