OK - first I want to say I do not post this in any way to be offensive to anyone. Thing is - in a recent discussion here about the British class system, the caste system in India was mentioned, and I realised I knew nothing about it. I have tried to research on the Net about the origins of the system and stuff such as "reservation" but I would like to hear the views of people who actually live in India. So what does it mean to you? How does it affect your daily life? Thank you.And - please no fighting! I do not mean to offend anyone - just genuinely interested.

Well, I will just try. The caste system in India is based on 'Chaturvarnya' - four colours/divisions. It is not based on the colour of the skin, but on the occasion of the people. There are 'Brahmins', the most previleged caste, who are religios priest and men of learning, who used to have a spiritual power over the rest of the classes. They could have been on the top, hierarchically. Then, there wre the 'Kshatriyas' who were kings, soldiers, fighters. They did rule the lands, you see. The third caste, the 'Vaishyas', were merchants who travelled a lot for trade. The final class, the 'Sudras'were almost like slaves, the underprevileged ones who did the menial jobs for others. The current caste system is not based exactly on this four-fold divisions. there are many sub-castes, and the Brahmins have lost their power and significance in the last couple of years. "reservation' was a government plan to uplift the downtrodden people who belonged to lower castes, but there are lots of problems regarding this, as you can imagine. In some cases, those who belong to upper castes are not financially secure, so they find it difficult when they don't get as many opportunities and support for education or employment, as the 'reserved' class people get. But the question needs to be addressed with a lot more research, as the lower caste people are still subjugated in many ways. It is a very complex issue, but hopefully, the new educated generation in India succeeds in tackling it.

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to explain things so fully to me. I really do appreciate your answer. And don't worry about the mistakes - I have a keyboard that "sticks" sometimes and I am always making typos because the keys stick together! Thanks again.
