Presidential Campaigns Starting Earlier Than Ever?

Why is it that with the midterm elections only a few months past, candidates are already declaring for a Presidential election that is still 2 years away? Shouldn't our leaders in Washington at least act like they're doing something about the country's problems before they start trying to get their next job?

This is an oddity in the political arena. Never before have we seen so many people join a national race so quickly.
The way our system works, campaigning begins immediately after the final votes are counted (even earlier in some cases). It is a downfall to having 2 year terms in the House, but we still have the best system.
