his character was the skipper. his real name was alan hale jr.

The Skipper's actual name was mentioned on the pilot. The show had been re-cast after the original pilot aired, so the re-cast show's first episode began with a scene (of the cast listening to a radio news report about their disappearance) to explain everyone's background. The Skipper's name was given as Jonas Grumby.
