English Fluency as the basis of Earning more in Mylot??

Philippines
January 28, 2007 9:09pm CST
i invited a friend to join mylot and she refused saying she has visited mylot and mylot gives only a cent per discussion and it is too little for the time spent in thinking and typing the discussion or response. what really caught my attention was when she said that, it seems those fluent in the English language get better pays than those not. this leaves me pondering on could there be a truth to her statement? i noticed a lot of mylot users who have difficulty expressing their ideas and opinions, especially the non-americans, like indians, chinese, singaporeans, and filipinos. because of being non fluent in english some users just post short responses like only two sentences or less. i for one am a Filipino and there are times when i cant find the right words to effectively convey my ideas. there is really an advantage if one knows how to speak english well, especially to those who have english as their native language. do you think then that there is a truth to the statement that english fluency is the basis of earning more in mylot??

Wow, you are wonderfully fluent! I do believe it makes a difference. I don't think myLot discriminates, but I do think that since the discussion IS in english that gives people who speak english well an advantage. It is easier for us to find the right words, as you say, to provide more detailed responses. Also, I think that english speakers are more likely to respond to topics that are written in such a way that it is easy for them to understand. It's unfortunate that the language issue exists, but I think it does.

akaneon, i beg to disagree with your comment that this site should be limited to US/UK/Canada only. I myself is a filipino and though our native tongue is not use to speaking in english, I can say that we can understand and explain ourselves with "your" language, though i admit that there may be lapses, that is not enough reason for you or anyone to discrminate us in joining this site or to any other site in which the medium of communication is english. it's sad to think that there are people out there who tends to discriminate other people simply because they can't fully understand what the other person is trying to convey. i myself experienced this discrimination when i worked as a customer service representative. we cater to the needs of foreign customers, some are so close-minded that just by hearing our opening spill, when they hear that we have even a very little a foreign accent, without even letting us explain will just cursed at us then asked for someone who's with their own race. what do we do? do we discriminate and cursed them back? no! because we understand more, and we apologize instead than curse back at them. not just because cursing them back is against our company policy but because as an individual, as a person, we try and we do understand. don't they think that they have their own foreign accent to our ears as well, but we don't take it against anybody. so just to reiterate my point, though we have our native language, we can express ourselves in "your" language, maybe sometimes even better than those who use this language everyday. you can't find enough reason to discriminate not just filipinos but those who have their own native language as well in joining and expressing ourselves in this kind of forum.

of course not, what made your friend think of that? Everybody is welcome to join even if your not fluent. They still get paid for the responses or idea that you share. Mylot is the great community and i think they dont discrimanate someone who cant fluently speak english. In fact for me it really helps me a lot to practice my english and i could say in a month i have improve myself.

On the contray my friend. She is right. Even though mylot will pay for any contribution to its forums, those who are fluent in english will be more likely to post replies of higher quality in relevance to the discussion. Therefore, the higher quality the content, the more money you earn on this website. If you are only posting one or two lines per reply its no wonder that she recieve one cent or less. I try to keep my post lengthy and detailed as possible, also being relevant to the topic, and knowledgeable. I on average receive 5-6 cents per posting as I only have 200 posts and over 7 dollars earned in the 4 days I was active.

Smille, you might want to try not using netspeak. It might help. And yes, I think how fluent you are in the English language affects how much you get paid, seeing as better English = more quality = more money

The only basis of earning at mylot are starting new discussions, replies and referrals...no such rule that only fluent in english language will get pay or even higher pay...

i dont think english is the basis on which the earnings are calculated.its more on the quality of the answer or response on which the earnings are calculated upon.but i do feel that short sentences dont make good money over here.

knowledge-- more than gold coins -
i think, its not.. first, rating is given by our fellow bloggers.. --as long as others understand what you mean, it will be okay, i guess.. they won't give you negative marks.. secondly, mylot is viewed as the means for improving our english.. --there are many of us here who are not fluent in english.. and as you say, sometimes you can't find the right words to convey your ideas.. then i think, blogging can help! just let your thoughts flow, never mind the grammar.. anyway, you can edit it before you finally post your comment.. third, mylot pays to those who are active and have high reputation --the more you post, the higher the possibility of increased payments.. blogging here in mylot is not only earning the dollars.. earning friends, and improving your english and your ideas.. i think that matters more..

Well, I'd say it is and it isn't. For those that cannot convey their thoughts into english well, they may be getting ranked negative on their responses, or not ranked at all, which might be part of the not getting paid as much. I'd also like to say that your english really is great! Keep up the great work! For anyone out there that has any trouble with their english skills, please feel free to add me and I will help you with basic english through messages as much as I possibly can.

that's very good to hear. glad that there are persons who offer their help instead of taking the lapses of some bloggers as a reason to discriminate.

Well, I personally do not respond to discusions that look like a 1st grader could have written it. Thats just the way I am. Personally Im sick and tired of seeing lame discussions with all the words wrong. I can forgive a few but all of them? Holly Cow!!! I know typos do exist but some are really not worth responding too. So if you can write something that interests me you will get a response.

WELL NOW THAT'S AN INTERESTING DISSCUSSION AND CERTAINLY HAS GREAT MERIT , AS DO SOME OTHER ARGUMENT'S AS TO HOW OR WHY SOME PEOPLE JOIN "MY LOT " AND IN LESS THAN NO TIME FLAT HAVE GOTTEN HUNDRED'S OF RESPONSES... NOW I AM A VERY OBSERVATION PERSON IN THAT I WILL CROSS REFERENCE THE REASONING HERE.. THERE COULD BE SOME TRUTH TO WHAT SHE SAY'S BUT SOME FORIGENERS ARE EARNING QUITE A LOT OF RESPONSES, AND PERSONALLY THERE DISSCUSSION'S ARE SOMETIMES NOT SO GREAT. AND ALTHOUGH I FIND NOTROUBLE BEING EXPRESSIVE IN MY RESPONSES OR DISSCUSSION'S POSTED I HAVE YET TO EARN $ 1.00 US. AND ALL OF MY RESPONSES ARE LONG . NO ONE WORD ONE LINERS... YET SOME OF THESE ARE PAID OVER & OVER AGAIN..SO IT'S DIFINATLY TIED TO AGE, NONSENSESICAL, SOMETIMES FOOLISH STUFF.. HARDLY ANY INTELLECTUAL WORK DISSCUSSIONS HERE ... I AM JUST CHECKING IT OUT MY SELF .. AS TO WHERE IS THE KEY .. IT COULD BE HOW YOU TAG YOUR DISSCUSSION'S THAT MAY DISPLAY IT IN MORE PLACES AS IN PAGES THAT'S GOT TO BE A BIG ONE BY MY OBSERVATION...... ANY WHO MY TAGALOG IS VERY,VERY RUSTY, BUT THE FILIPINO'S I MET AT HOSPITAL WERE SPECIAL PEOPLE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE ( LOVE YOUR KITTY PICTURE ).

No this section saying that people that are more fluent in English do not necessarily are better paid than others, because it depends on a lot of things here such as discussions, responses and best response but I do always try to help those that are not fluent in English, yes it is easier for the English speaking people to express themselves more easily, I do agree with what you are saying here, but it is not the basis of earning more in mylot if you need any help Cuddleme I will be here for you so please just add me to your profile as your friend so that I can help you more.

Going by your post, your English & grammar is fine, if anything it's a lot better than people I know that use English as their first language. So I see no reason why your English will cause you to earn less :)

Yes, there is partly true. I think you have also noticed that mylot pays more on Quality Discusssions. And when you say Quality - Fluency to the English Language is part of it.

English fluency is not synonymous to being analytic, expressive, and logical. One can be fluent but lazy in expressing what he thinks and feels though I agree that is an advantage. The challenge for us non-Americans is to exceed our expectations and be better, if not one of the best. English fluency is an ingredient or a factor. But in the end, it is how a person delivers his opinions, chooses his words, and relates to the topics that he can increase his mylot earnings. So let us not be intimated or shy out from the challenge of exceding our expectations from ourselves and the mylot community.

thanks howiedy. i agree, english fluency is not synonymous to being analytic and logical. but english fluency may well lead us to being able to express better and make longer posts and better pays.

Hmmm - good question and I hate to say it but I think English fluency is the basis of earning more on myLot. It just makes sense really - the English speakers will be more likely to post more and make lengthier posts as well. I'm full of admiration for those for whom English is not their first language and yet they still manage to post and contribute to discussions, etc. I certainly couldn't do it - it took me three hours to write a six line email in Spanish the other day - and I spent 3 years studying Spanish at school!

i think it is true. most of the people here are pretty fluent in english and it gives less money for people that don't spell words as well as others. i have seen people here that do have difficulty as you stated but i still respond to their discussions because i get what they're saying. i have had a few boyfriends that didnt speak much english and had a lot harder time writing in english. i think your friends statement is very accurate.

i am filipino..i admit that it's difficult for me to compose my own discussion and responses to others discussion. Most of my discussions and responses i made had only 2-3 sentences and some are wrong grammars. But i not ashame on that..at least i tried to share my opinion. I joined this site not just only to earn dollars but also to improve my english communication skills. I hope later on I'll spoke english fluently as you are.

You are getting your message across just fine. Your grammar doesn't have to be perfect to be clear. I'm impressed with people who can communicate so well in languages other than their native ones. Most Americans can't.

I know that Mylot rates better when the replies or questions are more like 3-4 sentences rather than 3-4 words. If you are not fluent then it would be difficult to communicate. Those that are fluent in english don't take full advantage of their skills either. eg. U like friut? R U cold? Those I do not even respond to. But if someone is trying to convey an idea that is worth while. I do respond to the post.

I don't think that's true but I think that Mylot prefer proper punctuation and capitalization. I think that would help us on writing better and improving our skills. I think you'll earn more on the quality of discussion rather than the way you write English.

According to the guidelines, all reviews should be written in English, but with time your English should become better. Keep trying and don't give up.
