How many of you here are Umberto Eco fans? I am conducting a little survey here on how big/small he is a name among people across cultures. I am a fan of Italian writers in general, but this inteliigent man who exhibits a childlike curiosity for all things on the face of the earth is simply my favourite. I loved The Name of Rose and am now devouring his The Lonely Flame of Queen Loana, page by page. please be part of this strange fan's club.

I liked "The Name of the Rose" too, as did my wife. She tried to read "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana" (I think that's the title) and she couldn't really stand it. A book Name of the Rose fans might like is Carlos Ruiz Zafon's "Shadow of the Wind." It's better than Name of the Rose, IMO.

I am really glad that you liked at least one book by him. It seems The Name of Rose is the book liked by many people across the world while other books like Foucault's Pandulum disappoint, or turn off many. I am sorry that I made a mistake about the title of his latest novel as well, yes, it is the Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana. ( I seem to have made the maximum number of erros in this post, which, believe me, is quite uncharacteristic of me...hahahaha)However, I liked this latest novel very much, though I repsect your wife's views.

I still want to read it, regardless of her views. I don't know if we still have it though...

I too loved The Name of the Rose, though that is all that I have read by him. I saw the film first and felt that I should read the book.

I've read all apart from 'The island of the day before' and the non-fiction. I've liked them all altho Foucault's pendulum is the only one I struggled with as the charaters really annoyed me.

I also admire Umberto Eco and his works. I've watched the film adaptation of his novel "The Name of the Rose" and I've also read his Travels in Hyperreality.
