why people call doctor's work their practice ...?

a doctor is the one who has the most important job relared to peoples life..
but doctors never work they alwayz do practice wih people's lifes ..
a doctor always says that i m having practice of 15 yrs. etc..
than what they mean that they were only practiceing on ppls lifes..
