I guess for a strictly gaming pc AMD would be your choice..but if you are not tight on budget..Id go directly to the top of the line intel processors....
get 2-3gb of ram..
a motherboard expandable up to 4...
top of the line NVIDIA or ATI graphics card with 256mb and 256bit...some are 256mb but then 128bit...im not sure but i think i saw a 512mb vid card out already but with only 256bit...get that one..that would be so brilliant...
and also you would want to upgrade on your display if you are not already using LCD monitors..get something like 17" or 20"..
im sorry but gamers always want the best..thats why i am recommending these specs..
a hard disk with big storage size..this way you could install more games...haha..
get a good keyboard...a comfortable chair.....good speakers...and a reliable mouse..opticals and oh...lazers are in too..
i wonder how much my dream specs would cost all in all..hehe...

Ok lets go playing games, for processor I think right now Intel is more boosting than amd, using their E6600 line up core2duo kills amd almost on all sectors, but if we only talk about perfomance than you should take intel core2duo E6600 as your processor, but (again hehehe) if you also considering Price perfomance than you should go with amd, you could take AMD64 X2 am2, allready dualcore also and the price tag is lower (pretty much I think).
The other you should think are, VGA card, Memory to of them should be advanced to for playing games, don't just look forward for the processor, example you bought the faster processor on market, but you only using oldfashioned Vga card or you lack in memory size, than you will get an breakdance like games ^^!.

if you have a buck to purchase Intel Core Duo then use the processor Core Duo for gaming. Core Duo expands and increase gaming performance. Intel Core Duo technology is already at the peak of gaming performance today. Also, if you can purchase nvidia geforce8800gtx video card then you already have a hardcore gaming PC.

I've used AMD's for the longest time and have never been let down, they are cheaper, highly overclockable, and have beaten Intel at countless contests to see which one stood taller, remember battle of the dual cores?...
So it boils down to this. Do you want to wright your report... or do you want to shoot it up in Battlefield 2?...
