I am considering to move to Florida, NYC is just too expensive, any cities down there better than others? Is central Florida safer than living on the coast?

Depends on what you want. Big city life like NYC, try Miami. Perfer a smaller city, try Tampa or Ft. Lauderdale. Lot of choices and lifestyles. If you want a smaller easy going place, try samller cities or towns north of Tampa. I am in central west Fl. in a small town and love it. Beaches close, quieter place. Open land for great drives and less expensive. The bigger the city the more expensive, just like anywhere. Lots of great places to visit too! Good Luck!

Thanks for your comments. So many people have told me to avoid the coasts becasue of the hurricanes, but I guess a hurricane will hit anywhere. I have never experienced one of them.

Hi howard96h I am wondering wether you had moved your house since you started this discussion 1 year ago? Hope you had made your right choice and is happy with it. I had been to the United States 5 years ago. But I was in the west coast, and never got the chance to the east coast, therefore I do not know how Florida looks like. I was staying in Oregon for the whole trip. But I had a short trip to California, Nevada, Utah & Arizona.

That's right. Our parent should be our priority. I would do the same if I were you. I hope she will be getting better soon. I had never been to NYC too, but feel that it will be an interesting place for me, as a curious tourist.

Hi my friend, no I am still in New York. I was going to go last year but my mother became ill and I can't leave her in NY sick. I have postponed moving until her health improves or she decides to come along. She comes first.

If you don't mind a little cold at night for a month or so, Tallahassee is a pretty good city. We are about an hour's drive from the beaches and relatively safe from hurricanes. The last hurricane to hit here was in 1988. The infrastructure is lacking a little bit here but on the plus side, there are so many trees, it feels like you are living in the country even though you're in a city. I've lived here seven years now and I like it a lot.

I lived in Ft Lauderdale when I was a kid. I hated it because it was so different from upstate NY. You might enjoy it because it is pretty urban, but with lots of beautiful greenery and more space than NYC. My grandparents lived in Haines City, FL for several years. It was just beautiful there with lots of orange groves and a little more rural feel to it.

Big cities are always more dangerous than small towns. It doesn't really matter whether you're on the coast or in more central areas. I was raised in Florida and moved there again later in life. Things that aren't mentioned much when people are talking up the state are the bugs (everwhere)and the intense heat. If you have problems with either of those, go North, young man!

Scorpions, flying roaches and creepy crawlers - wow! Do you see these a lot less in a larger city compared to a smaller town in FL?

It wouldn't be so bad if it was just the lovebugs. Florida has a lot of poisonous insects--black widow and brown recluse spiders, scorpions, stinging caterpillars... Not to mention mosquitoes by the billions, flying roaches, and a zillion other creepy crawlies.
