I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. Proper grammar calls for the use of "an" before a word beginning with the letter "u".
For example: Grammar is an unpopular subject in school.

for eg. we generally say "A UNION WAS FORMED" and not "AN UNION WAS FORMED".....
