Technology, can't live without it.

Technology is wonderful. One can shop, pay the bills, talk to a friend overseas and even order out, without ever leaving your home. Paper work done with a breeze. Knowledge instantly available with the click of a mouse. Food done in seconds. Coffee brewed with a push of a button. Isn't it scary to think that someday these might go. Here in the Philippines, there's still a lot of homes who don't depend on technology for a lot of tasks. I don't have a computer at home, but we do have a computer rental business. No microwave, no fax machine. Not because we can't afford it, we just don't need it. If the electricity goes out, which usually does. We still can survive. We have alcohol lamps or candles for light, fans made from palm leaves, firewood for the stove, and the typewriter for paper works. We also have waterpumps that work manually. If there was one modern device that you can own and never leave without, what would it be? I think I won't be able to live without the TV. Mainly because my kids would drive me crazy for entertainment.=) We experienced a blackout last year for 2 weeks, and I think I've sang BINGO far too many times to get my kids entertained. So the TV must never go. How about you? What device would you choose to stay, the tv, computer(with internet), cellphones, palm pilots...

I think for me it's the computer, because it can get so much work done with so much ease! Why use a mechanical word processor, when I can write my texts in Office Word? Why should I look up in dictionaries or books, if can find anything on the internet? It's true, it can create addiction, but it's very helpful. Try instant messaging: talk for free online, send files, make voice chat and even video chat!

The computer truly is great invention. I can't imagine how we survived without it before. But you're right about it being addictive. I've got computer gamers at our shop who can last more than 12 hours just playing RAN(online game)! No eating, just some potty breaks. I don't think I'll last that long from hunger! Thanks for the reply.

I live in Canada, and it can get very cold in the winter (-20`C for most of last week). If my power was out for a long time, I think the thing I'd miss the most was my hot water heater. Everything else I can improvise. I can boil water on the propane BBQ for coffee and Kraft Dinner; I can heat a few rooms with our wood stove; I can even listen to the radio if I stock up enough batteries. But I need a hot shower every few days!
