Little Girls and Fingernail Polish

When i was growing up I wasn't allowed to wear certain colors on my fingernails. "RED" was a big no no in my mothers house. I wasn't allowed to start wearing fingernail polish until i was about 6-7 years old. I was told that wearing the color red on your fingernails was for common lose woman. I didn't understand what that meant back then, i understand they statement, and i totally disagree. My niece just turned 10 and she wants to wear nail polish, when she comes over i allow her any color she wants, My sister called me last night cursing me out because i forgot to take the "RED" polish off before i took her home. Was i wrong, shes just a little girl to me. Is there a certain color you think little girls shouldn't be able to wear on there fingernails? What's a good age to allow them to wear fingernail polish?
