When I was at school we didn't have lockers. We just carried our stuff with us in a bag or rucksack. It didn't do us any harm. We're talking about children here, nit old people who's bones will break if they have to carry loads.

Thank you for your response. I wasn't thinking about broken bones was thinking more about future back problems from carrying around 15 to 25 pounds worth of books all day.:) Good Luck!

Yeah...I don't get this flip flop thing. My kids are allowed to wear these things to school now and definetly take advantage of it. I can't stand wearing them cause they make my toes cramp up. Don't see how they can be comfortable. And they are not good for your feet for sure!

yes i suffer from back pains and im only 16! so many of us youngsters ARE going to have serious back problems when we are older. Great time to become a back doctor. Also all the girls wearing uncomfortable flat flip flops and high heals..another wonderful thing-in 20 years foot doctors are going to make a fortune :)

In our school, the kids are not allowed to carry their backpacks from class to class. They must put their extra books, purses, coats and anything else in their lockers between classes. My youngest is asthmatic and she had to get special permission to carry a small purse so that she could have her inhaler with her during the day.

It was the same way when I was in highschool. They started it for two reasons, backpacks are in the way in the aisles of the classrooms and posed a fire hazard and because they didn't want kids bringing weapons to school in their backpacks. It didn't last long though because we had so many books and not enough time between classes to always go to our locker so they eventually let us have backpacks again.

Thank you for your response. That makes sense, really appreciate a clearer reason for that, I had figured the weapons part hadn't though of the fire hazard part though. Good luck to you here at mylot!

well...lockers helped me a lot in high school since i didn't want to carry around 10lbs of books all day. in our school, the lockers were pretty small, not like those big ones. i never did keep food or much valubles in them. if they wanted to steel my school books, they're just sad. all my cd players, phones etc stayed with my in my bag. i never really thought about my locker being that dirty. i mean, i felt worse while in the school bathroom.

I think that the main issues with lockers today is the fact that children have a place to hide stuff. I believe that there should be routine surprise locker checks just in case. I think that a locker is too convenient to give up it can get stressful having o carry your books around all the time!!

Thank you for your response. I agree with them having locker surprise locker checks. I
m sure that therewould be those that oppose it though, shouting privacy issues and such. Good luck to you here at mylot!

My daughter is 9 and she has to carry all her books home everyday. I have a hard time carrying her backpack. I guess there are pros and cons, but in my daughters case, she needs a locker.

Thank you for your response. The heaviness of those backpacks should be of great concern to all. Good luck to you here at mylot!

My son had a locker in school, his school was enormous, almost 4000 kids. He did not have time to use the locker during the day because none of his classes were even in hte same wing.
Him and 3 other kids, used to share lockers even though it was against school rules.
His school though did not require them to carry around their books, each classroom had the books for the appropraite classes in there. That is an alternative, though his workbooks and notes and other things certainly were heavy enough.
They were not allowed to use bags with wheels either.
Since the school is already over crowded, they are starting an addition this spring.
The school already has 7 gyms and 3 cafeterias. 7 assistant principals.

My daughters are in highschool now and for the first time ever they don't have a locker. I never thought about them not having one so I was a little baffled as to why they don't have them in this school. I thought it was dumb and inconsiderate to the kids. After thinking about it for a while I understand why. The previous post explains alot. I do however wish my kids did have them, it would be so much easier on them.

I think that schools should have lockers. They have way too many books to carry. If they choose not to use the locker, fine. But is should be available for them. Blessings, M&M

Well I tend to think that there should definitely be lockers so they don't have to lug everything with them all day long - that's rough on them considering the weight of the books and other things that are necessary for them to have with them. But here they don't allow lockers for putting your things into them so they have to lug all their school stuff around!!!

Thank you for your response. I agree with you that I think that the kids should have a locker to place their books in so that they don't have to carry them around all day.

I don't know about the whole "kids having medical problems" issue, mainly because I am single and childless, but I only had a locker when I was in junior high between 1977 and 1980. If I used THAT once or twice, it's too many times, because we were issued combination locks and I could never, ever, get the darned thing right.
I remember wearing out not one but four backpacks in high school; I had several classes where no texts were used (chorus, art), but all my other classes had big, fat, and boring texts.
Maybe they should have electronic textbooks, sort of like laptops or Blackberries, instead of those awful hard copy volumes.

My sons school has lockers and I must say I do agree with that. He takes his sports kit in on a monday and its there ready for games. He uses it for his books as well. He tends to just bring home the ones that he needs. He would always be forgetting something otherwise!

I hated my lockers in school. It was really a pain to keep anything in there. It was easier to just keep it all in my back pack. Like the others that responded, there was never really time to get from my last class to my locker, to the bathroom, and then to my next class. I rarely had a minute to chat with a friend in the hall between classes when carrying everything in my bag, so if I had to go to my locker too I was late to classes.

Thank you for your response. I really didn't like my assigned locker in school as it was so far away from where my classes were. I shared most of the time with my boyfriend, his was right in the middle of all my classes. Good luck to you here at mylot!
