Help! My baby is constipated. I have been regularly breastfeeding him and giving him water but I noticed that he's having a hard time moving his bowels. He strains too hard to the point that his face gets all red and he cries (maybe because it's very painful for him). I have tried giving him fruits like papaya and bananas, but still it's the same thing. What should I do? Please help!

You can do several things. Main thing to help is suppositories. You need to stimulate the bowels. You can use a Q-tip and vaseline and insert it into the babies bottom. This is not easy and you need patience but it will stimulate them to go soon. You can also use Apple Juice. You can also do a search on the web and it will give you several things to do. Try www.babycenter.com, verybestbaby.com and see if they can help you. Good Luck and let me know if this helps.

It's not good to use suppositories because the little babies will become dependent on them & not be able to move their bowls with out stimulation. Only if a person is directed by a Dr. should they use any type of suppository.

Did he just start on a new vitamin? Is he taking any vitamins that contain iron? If he is, stop it for now and have him seen by his pedia as soon as possible. My baby was constipated at first when the doctor prescribed vitamins with iron so we stopped that.

my baby used to haev that problem when he was 1 month old, but my mother told me about achamomile oil massage, it it anti flatulent, massage your baby's stomach, from the right chest down to the abdomen, in circle form, massage gently, and then your both hands ,wipe away from the sides.
it helps a lot, now my son is not suffering from constipation, he loosen his bowel now,
and if symptoms persist, consult your doctor,i think milk change or certain medicine for costipation will do..
goodluck and happy parenting

Stay away from the bananas - that's going to make it worse. Depeding on the age, you don't want to introduce fruit juices too early so be careful with the juice.
What worked for me - age birth to 18 mos - a tablespoon of white Kayro syrup in 4 oz of formula or water. Give it to him warm not cold.
Good luck!

Prune juice should fix the baby's problem. It will help ease the baby's digestive system. You can mix it with some water if you would like.

I work at a baby store, and we sell this product called "Gripe Water". It's made my Little Remedies (or Little Tummies). I'm pretty sure that's the one for upset stomach. If not, it's a similar product by the same brand.
Anyways, I've had lots of customers come in with the same issue and they swear by the stuff. Maybe that's something that would be worth checking out for you.

How old is your baby? Don't give him bananas cause they will constipate him more. My son was having that problem too and my doctor said to take vaseline and rub it on a rectal thermometer and stick it in there and sometimes that will help them. You can also get baby suppositories (spelling?). And depending on his age there are some laxative drops you can give him too.

If it is happening a lot then you should take him to the doctor, but you could try prunes or prune juice. if you can get him to eat them or drink it. it tastes horrible but if he likes it it'll work. if not, there are supossitories that you can give him that will soften his stool. your doctor would be able to tell you more.

Maybe you should bring him to the doctor to get him checked out. After all he is baby and doctor will know what to do to help his digestion system.

prune juice will help but better to consult your pediatrician about this.

Don't give him bananas - apple or grape juice, if he's under 6 weeks call your doctor. If he hasn't been drinking juices start by diluting them half juice half water. Also, it's horrid tasting but 1/4 teaspoon of castor oil will help.

if i remember right-bananas are constipating. when babies get diariah, the doctors usually tell you to them bananas. try apple juice, and sometimes if they are taking infant vitamins, the iron gets them constipated. maybe you could just try the regular infant vitamins without the iron every other day or so. and check with your doctor first.

I went through this with my daughter from about 18 months until about 5 yrs. old. She actually had to come home from daycare a few times because her stomach hurt so bad. Her natural mother took her to the Dr. and they put her on laxatives which was horrible for her. They gave her terrible cramps and then diarhea for hours afterward.
The one thing that we found that really worked well for her was the old standby, just good old prune juice. When she was 2-3 we gave her just 3-4 oz. once a day and then increased it as she got bigger. It never failed an didn't have the bad cramping and side effects like laxatives do. Not to mention, their bowels can become dependent on laxatives.

Awww...poor baby! I'd call your dr. and he/she will be able to tell you what to do. I give my daughter gas relief drops to help her. But yeah...I'd call the dr.

I have heard that anise tea works well, anise that you buy in the market in the spice section, boil it up, strain it and give the baby the cooled tea, look it up or ask the dr, but worth a try. Also, a tummy massage on the belly spell the worf love with your fingers over and over helps it get things moving.

The first thing you can try is giving him prune juice. Banana's will constipate more. Also you can add 1 tbsp of dark caro syrup to his milk bottle (if he's bottle fed). You can do this on a daily basis it is very safe. Just make sure you use the dark caro and not the clear.
