Is algebra really useful anywhere. What do we learn by learning Algebra (all those x+y and a+b )... I did like it and I got good marks, but I just don't know where it is used. Please let me know if you all know. Thanks.

Mathematics is Queen of all subjects. Algebra is the heart of Mathematics. Algebra simplifies the complicated things 30*34 in simply u can say 30*30,add,30*4 this is a(b+c)=ab+ac if u start to see the use then u will be appreciating algebra ,yes the heart in human body simply pumps the blood but the systematic process is wondering same way algebra also

That was a very nice reply, explaining mathematics in medical language. I liked it , but you wrote it very late or you could have go the best answer credit. Have a nice day.

I've never got good marks in algebra, its not like I was bad at studies, but I never found it interesting. Its may be because of our teaching method. We just blindly solve the problems, what we get out of that... nothing. But, those really have intersting relation with our day to day life, (I came to know this when I was in the last year of graduation that too in some last lecture as I use to bank for many of them).

May be you are right, every kind of knowledge is always helpful, one have to understand it. May be I am not intelligent enough to understand the logic behind it. Still I remember, I got good marks in algebra. Thanks for your response.

Algebra is a method of displaying or depicting relationships between factors in many aspects of the physical world. For example if one wishes to know the velocity of a body; in 'longhand english' the expression is Velocity equals distance travelled divided by time taken. The mathematician needs a smaller expression (universal) at this stage - i.e. v = d/t then using values derived from studies the calculation can be made. In everyday english we speak of many physical relationships - eg MILES PER HOUR; Miles per Gallon etc.

Well I can't explain you the whole algebra over here but as you want it in an applied manner I'll explain it here, suppose you want to do a multiplication like 59 x 61 how do you do that? With the help of algebra you can do it this way (a-b)(a+b) = (a2 - b2) (60-1)(60+1)=(3600 - 1) = 3599. see this becomes so simple. I have many many premitive examples for you but time and efforts don't allow me to do any thing better than this for you right now.

Oh really, I think mathamatics is used in our day today use and not Algebra. I agree that engineers and scientists may be using this. But not you and me. Have a nice day.
