I try to look for writing contests that give scholarships and money prizes to help me save money for college. I won one in the past but it was a long time ago. I try to enter poetry contests mostly. But I can only enter ones with no fees. Have you ever joined a writing contest? Did you ever win?

http://www.freelancewriting.com/contests.html is a good place to look for contests and they tell you about entry fees and what not. I've entered a poetry contest twice in my lifetime and have won publication in their anthology. That site is www.poetry.com

I thought it was a scam but I didn't mind submitting one of my poems. I will never buy anything there. Thank you for the heads up.

Congratulations to those who have entered contests and won, or placed. I myself do not enter contests though just for my own vanity. I have a hard enough time convincing myself I am good enough with what I do without having to enter a contest and be let down, or put down.

Aaw. Well you never know if you have talent that you can share with the world through your writing. But some people do like to write their best stuff and share it only with themselves (I am one of them).

Poetry.com is a scam! Please don't send these people any money. They accept everyone and then try to sell you a book. Here's a link that will give you more information: http://mommyspace.blogspot.com/2006/10/poetry-contest-scam.html
Spread the word and don't be taken! I'm so tired of all the scams out there. With the internet, they've really grown out of control. We need to look out for each other!

It's amazing how much that site pushes for you to buy their book just because your poem is in there. I get many e-mails in my inbox from them also requesting photographs and membership fees. I don't pay for poems I worked hard at. That's how I look at it.

That's great! Maybe trying for local contests will be good too. I hope to try some that my school has informed me about.

Sorry, I have to agree with wsue1023. Poetry.com only wants you to buy their books. I have never received any money from them, just the option of publishing my poem. But how do I no this unless, I buy. This is another catch.
I have never bought a book. I want to be paid for my work, not to pay someone else. Good luck with your search though.
