I've watched The Dark Crystal many dozens of times since I was a little girl, and as I grow older and study more and more philosophy, I find myself thinking.. this is one of the movies that I have treasured and always kept a copy of, and yet, I have so many thoughts about it! The separation of the more violent emotions and tendancies from the peaceful, serene and wise.. the tiny, frail essence of bravery that heals that which is sundered.. there are so many directions one could take in analyzing the metaplot of this movie. What is your take on it, myLot? Is this *just* a children's movie with an interesting plot? Or is this a way for the director and screenwriter to make a statement to the parents who may watch it, to the folks like myself who still own this movie? Dark Crystal, socially hard-hitting, or mere fantasy?

Heya, when I was a child I absolutely LOVED this movie and watched it over and over and over again. I also found it absolutely terrifying. I know that I didn't really understand it but I knew that in the end everything was ok. Then there was about 15 years between then and the next time I watched it, and this time I definatly understood it. I think that it is certainly a comment on social issues, framed in a fantasy childlike world. As you said, there are many ways that one could go when analyzing the plot of this movie but I just wanted to add that looking back I think it was a movie a little ahead of its time, being that it was animated puppets so it appealed to a children's audience when i really do not think it was much of a children's film.
