The English language

I would just like to say to mylot community how humble I feel, and overwhelmed at times, by peoples grasp of the english language. It amazes me that so many people speak english, writing in english is even harder. I neither speak nor understand another language, I, like most English people, have problems with my own language so I admire (and take my hat off to) all of you. I honestly mean this, so please do not think that I am being 'odd', rude or condescending in any way.
I think mylot is a brilliant way for people all over the world to 'chat' together, I'm so glad I joined.

Me on the other hand I usually feel awkward for my english and sometimes I see a really interesting discussion, on mylot or other online communities I participate and I hesitate to answer because I feel my english level is too low to express correctly my opinion. I am really trying to improve it, though.

I am most impressed with your command of my mother tongue! Don't be shy - you are good.

It is not uncommon to encounter multilingual people, but unfortunately they are rarely English. The problem originates from the time when Britain was a global power and the British Commonwealth encompassed a vast portion of the globe. This created a situation whereby english was a dominant language and even today is the most widely spoken language on the planet.
As a result, the english speaking people tend to have become inherently lazy when it comes to learning a different language.
I work with people of several nationalities, and I am constantly impressed by their command of english.

It is kind of you. We try to speak English though it is not natural for most of us.
I read an american woman's discussion about why do people here on mylot, who cannot speak english well.
When I asked her if she ever was besides USA, or did she speak any laguages besides her mother tongue. She said no, and she never tried.
So, I do not understand why some americans think that Usa is the middle of the world. And who doesn't speak English that can be only dumb.

I only said to you my experiences. Since UK is in Europe the people think about nations on another way. mY BROTHER LIVEs in London, and he said that it doesn't matter how do you speak the english language, because the bigger part of the people speak it in dialect. So the people learnt to undeastand each other. Not only the language, but accept the nations.

english language is really becoming a universal language.i mean in every workplace, internet or places of high prestige you have to talk in english only.and in todays society you will not be accepted if you dont know english.we also studied in english medium school in which every subject was taught in english.so its not really that hard for people.and apart from that english language has great literature so one would miss it out if they didnt knew english.

It's good to know that you are overwhelmed to those who knows how to speak and even write the English language though it's really hard for us non-English people to do this. Maybe it's a matter of learning and education too. We really don't speak any English words at home so it's really hard for me but I have learned speaking and even writing it from school. I really improved a lot because of this forum where you are forced to speak the English Language because it's the proper thing to do so that everyone can understand you, lol. This site helps a lot just don't be mad for the wrong spelling and wording errors. We do our best anyway. :)

I'm sure glad I learned English and joining in the discussions here in mylot helps a lot in improving my use of it. Just to be able to express yourself in a level enough for people to understand and respond is a wonderful feeling. If only I can write the way native speakers do will be great.

Hello everyone.....
The real problem is that Americans do not speak English.
We speak American. It is somewhat like English, but if you listen you will hear a definite difference.
I am most impressed by those who speak more than one language. I understand a few words in several languages, but really not a lot. To me, some languages express things backwards, I imagine that the way Americans express things seems backwards to some that try to learn. It just confuses me.
Those of you that can speak and read more than one language can really help the rest of us understand some of these discussions.

I agree with you Tom, couldn't have put it better myself. I'm so used to slang that I now realise just how bad my English has become, so I'm hoping that my use of the language will improve on here. I also agree there's quite a difference between English and American.

It's very commendable of you to compliment those who speak English as a second language. They try so hard and put a lot of native speakers to shame. I teach English in Thailand and appreciate these kind of things.

Yes, through myLot, I believe I had improved my skills in the used of the English Language be it in grammar or communication skills. Well, its the only language that binds us together for such a long time and this world won't be in order without the English language.
Well, I'm in the Philippines, and I feel I'm in UK or USA or where ever as long as I used the English language. Thanks to the Philippine Government that, the English Language is promoted as the official government or private communication language. I believe, and I'm proud of that, we Filipinos are better English language communicator in the whole wide world and perhaps at par with the Americans or British.
Thanks to the English Language. I can't imagine where would I'd be without that language.
