I notice a lot of people on mylot use text talk a lot. Its driving me insane. I feel mean saying this but I think I am going to start rating people negatively who use it.
Its wrong, plain and simple its wrong and its something you should nip in the bud right now.
If you are learning or trying to learn the English Language and even I am still learning new things about my own language. My grammar is sometimes atrocious!
Any way grammar is another matter, but spelling you can do this it is so easy to get into the habit of spelling things in the correct manner.
I could bore you with a lesson on the why's wheres, theres and other little nuances of the blessed language but I won't.
Your all intelligent people and text talk does you great injustice.
Yes the language is hard but with practice here at myLot and other sites like it you will improve and get better and it will pay off dividends, it really will.
People think I am being mean or snooty because I pull them up about text talk but I have seen two this morning and really it would have been more eloquent and elegant in plain English.
Wat r u goin on abot!
Is very easily converted to
What are u going on about?
End of lecture. Probably loose a couple of stars for this! :)

All I can add to that is:
And everybody said: Amen! Thank you so much for posting this. It is without a doubt a pet peeve of mine. At first when I saw my teenage granddaughter doing it in instant messages and text messages it was really kind of cute; but she was 15.
Then I started getting instant messages and emails from adults with those crazy short-cut words. That made me shiver and quake inside. I agree with you 100%. Words are to be respected. I always aim to spell correctly, but there are times when typing that a wrong key is hit and the enter tab is typed before I notice, so I do understand that these kind of errors happen.
As far as grammar, I caught myself one weekend before I had to go on disability saying to my family as I was leaving the room during a pause in the movie we were watching, "A'hm goin' to da kithen an da bathroom, kin ah gitcha sumpin from da frigerator?" No one else noticed what I had said, but as I sat in the bathroom I realized what had just come out of my mouth. I was a professional woman and I knew that I did not speak like that at work. Where had that just come from? I'm not certain, but I am so happy to have heard it. It brought back my full attention to speech once again.
Thank you for the post!~Donna

Duh...I didn't realize that was text messaging. I just assumed some people were really bad at spelling. It figures, I don't text message. But still is it necessary to chop it up? Do you pay per character or message?

see hun thats the problem, people just think its poor spelling when its text talking language, either way its a very poor example to set to people who struggle with English as a second language.
I commend my friend because he is from Sweden and he tries so hard to spell and speak English correctly, then he see's text talk and he gets horribly confused.

Text talk is not a good thing to use on a forum like Mylot. I agree with you on this.
It is ok if you are using Text Talking while chating with friends on messenger or writing a mail to a friend. But in a forum we should take things little seriously, as long as it goes with our writing. And also you are getting paid for writing something on here, so you should deal with it fairly.

The problem is, most of those who use this text talk think they can use it off the Internet, too. They forget how to spell at all, or don't care, and then don't understand why they can't get a good job. Lazy people are lazy people .. and these abbreviations are just a sign of real laziness.

I think that it is a natural bleed over if you will. Most folks online and that use texting are taking on new styles. Not to defend any innapropriate communication. I agree that you need to use appropriate language for the proper situation. That being said, I think it is likely also a tool for typing faster here so as to create more posts. I think there needs to be a realisation that quality of quantity pays more. It's true. The forum type sites can be a great tool for learning English. Unfortunately, you might get a poor lesson though. I'll punch you in a "+".
