Baby Bonus

When a baby is born in Australia the government gives the mother $4,500 to help cover the cost of the newborn. If the mother is under 18 the $4,500 is paid in 10 instalments as it seems that teenagers are having babies to get the money. Does the country you live in give out money for newborns? Do you think it's a good idea? I should add that this was initiated to boost the birth rate as it was declining and this has been successful in turning it around but at what cost? A very large percentage of these babies are being born in low socioeconomic areas, one has to wonder the future for these children.

I live in the USA, at first I was going to say you don't get any money for having children. But that isn't true, if you are extreme low income than you get put on welfare to cover your expenses I am sure it comes to more than $4500. They pay for your rent, food, and cash for diapers and such. If you are not low income then the most you get is a credit on your tax bill every year. I would have to agree that perhaps the government is encouraging the growing population in a strange way. Perhaps it would be better if the money was put into a account and the teens could only have the money if they continue their education. Just a thought

Single mothers here also receive welfare until their youngest child is 8 then they have to go on unemployment benefits. A single mother who has 2 children would receive about $500 a week if they are renting and a little less if they have their own house. These payments are on top of the $4500 they are given when the baby is born.

Gosh, how nice for the people that really need it, but I do see your concern--because it could definately get out of control fast. Some people might have babies just for this money & then not spend it on the children or the expenses of the child. Too bad the gov. doesn't have a way to track how the money is spent & make sure it's only spent on certain things like diapers, hospital stay, clothes, food etc. That way the money would go towards the infant & the parents couldn't spend it on anything else. It's a good incentive for the people that really do need the help and will actually use that money for the good of their child and themselves but some people prob' do take advantage and not do the right thing with it. I live in the United States & we don't get any sort of support like that. Which, in a way is a good thing--but in another way-- it might lower the rate of abortion if people were paid a large amount like that to have children which would be good. But, if your just handed money like that either in full or installments and their isn't any way to track the way you are spending it-- it's hard to say if it's a benefit to people or not. I think it's a wonderful thing your gov. does for Mother's---but, hopefully they can get system in place to make sure it remains a benefit towards the mother and child.

Yes I do think they need a better system of handling the payment. The instalment plan for mothers under 18 has just been put in place as there has been an increase in pregnancies in this age group....but I feel something more needs to be done.

That must be nice. If we had that here in the Philippines, everyone would be having babies without end! I think they should pay people here not to have kids LOL. Anyway, $4,500 is not enough to raise that kid well so I don't think people will just have kids to get that bonus.

Since this payment has been available, have you noticed the amount of young mothers now that look like only children themselves? I dont agree that this payment should be made each time a person has a baby, but just for the first born. I live in Australia also and am still at an age where I could keep having children too. If the government offered me $50,000 to have a baby, I would still decline the offer. I personally know people that are having a baby a year just to get the payment. It is such a sad situation.

I wish I would have known this 16 years ago when I had my son. I think I would have hidden myself on a boat or something on it's way to Australia! *lol* I'm in the US and other than a small tax break at the end of each year, we get nothing. Like another posted stated - unless you are low income or very needy, you do not get anything for just having a baby. It would be nice though. I can also see your concern and I think the money would be better spent if they did not give teenagers money but rather vouchers for food, rent, baby clothing, bills - specific things so that the teenagers aren't blowing the money on their own desires and are instead forced to spend it to raise the baby.

These bonuses are used to increment the birth in those families who would like to have a baby but are in need of money!! You can't force someone to have a baby, so why not let those who want it, but can't afford it, to have their occasion?
