My friends often say that. For them, cartoon and anime have no difference.
but Animes, after all, is a cartoon with a lot of extra effort put in...it requires an equal amount of effort being watched... they disagree...
It gets worse when they start to call you call you 'cartoon charecter', '5 year old kid' and the like. I simply hate it!

Much true, I always hear that a lot!
I would say that they didnt have a chance to start and finish atleast one anime before they have used that comment. I know, at first it may seem that anime are childish but as you pay attention to the story, issues nowadays and even issues today are tackled. Issues like racism, corrupt government, harassment, blackmailing and even murders. Issues about teenagers, students, parenting and work issues are also tackled in some anime series.
Anime gives some insights on how to cope a problem or some circumstances. They give their advice or point of view on how to handle things or situation. Anime shows the possibilities of what will happen when you do this or do that or do what is best. It gives us options or shows us what is the better way to handle it.
There are some anime that tackles the struggles of teenagers today, like the anime entitled "Boys be". This series shows how a young man who's going through puberty. He encounters young love, betrayal, break up and reconcilation. How to court a girl, do's and donts when having a date. How you should behave when you are with your date or girlfriend. Issues teenagers are having problems and how they resolve some, its not a complete guide for teens but it can help to grow mature and not to grow lame and foolish.
It shows how teenage life is full of excitement and should be enjoyed and cherished.
Youngsters should be happy because its the best part of life (I guess?).

I hear that a lot too. They say that grownups shouldn't watch anime. That they are childish. One day, I invited those guys over at home and asked them if they'd watch some anime with me. They were like, "WTF?" but I told them that if after we watch and they still think so, I'd drop anime for good. They agreed. After we watched it, all of them were like "What was that?". All of them were psychologically damaged. So anime are for kids eh? LOL.
What did we watch? ELFEN LIED. :)

by the way, the show wasn't actually anime...BEYBLADE! And THAT's SO NOT boring!

Well, here's my two cents.
Anime, is definitely worse than cartoons. Why? Well let's just say it's a very childish art. They may turn it into something 'grown up' by putting in adult themes, but the thing is, it's rather silly. Characters that get big stupid looks on their faces whenever their emotions change, characters that can do really stupid stuff, and bad drawing. I mean, that's something I definitely want to watch! *end sarcasm*

My friends do that too. But after some time they just leave it be. But my family doesn't mind at all. They sometimes ask me what rubbish i'm watching, when i'm watching Full Metal Alchemist or something. SOmetimes they join in and watch some silly cartoons with me like Warner Bros dumb stuff for kids. I enjoy watching them but only if there's nothing else to watch.
But when i ask them to buy some CD of some cartoon movie or Disney movie like The Emporer's Groove, they don't mind at all. They even enquire about its availability when they contact my relatives.
Anyway, my advice to you is - just ignore them. They'll just drop it after a while.

Well, in the past one year, i've learnt that cartoon and anime are two diffrent things. Cartoons may be for children...but anime is for both. For eg: Even Gakuen Alice was rated for older audience when it was subbed or dubbed. So don't worry about what people think..just do what you enjoy. Life is really short - and animes just add spice to it...

firstly dude.
anime is not for kids, and if they are watching it they should not, i mean with all the ...uhm.... with all the adult stuff that keeps happening in it. (berserk)
it's just animation used for good plots and chracterization....
and it's nothing like the unspeakable stuff that comes on cartoon network.....

I think it has more to do with the content. If they still think anime is for little kids, make them watch Bible Black (just to eff with their heads.)
Or "Now and Then, Here and There". I would NOT let my younger cousins watch that. It's about as painful as something like Shindler's List.
Or what about Spawn? The animated series? Blood, gore, and naked women.
Do they consider comics books kiddie material? What difference is there between comics and anime? No difference between a novel and a dramatic live action series, honestly. Tell them to pick up Frank Miller's "Sin City". Or maybe Garth Ennis's "Preacher". Ask them if that's appropriate for little kids.
I could go on, but it has NOTHING to do with the media. It's the content. And frankly, FMA (:;waves the flag of fandom love

Yeah I sure recognise it, though I'm surrounded by geeks mostly so I don't get it very much but really it's so much better to watch than those braindead american shows that even tells you when to laugh, you really have to be into it, if you miss five minuits you may very well have missed something very important.

Well I am 20, a law student and I still watch Pokemon, Dragonball Z and Gundam Wing. If that makes a geek or sad that fine. To me, time enjoyed is not time wasted.

I'm 27, I still love watching anime. When I was a kid I couldn't afford to a tv so I just watch it from my friends. There's no harm in it. I actually get some of my interior designing cues from them. Good thing about Asia is that everyone loves anime regardless of age, gender and status. Although we have our occasional "elite" crowd that say it's uncool! Next thing you know is that they're hosting anime/gencon events.

age is relative. as far as i'm concerned, those folks who choose not to watch anime because of age issues don't know what they're missing! what an awful lot of waste heheh

Well, yeah, for some who are not very fond of it. For them, they thought it's just cartoon and it is made for kids. But then, I conclude that not all anime are for kids, that there are different genres for people of different age bracket. Also, sometimes, I was just wandering why is it they call me childish that they too are fond of cartoons totally for kids such as those in cartoon network (power puff girls, dexter's laboratory, etc.) and nickelodion such as Spongebob Square pants? Aren't they the ones to be called childish?

watching anime is not a child thing. Some times young adult watch these anime to unwind themselves and relax. But that doesn't mean that you are being childish or what. Sometime we have to put ourselves on other's shoes to understand. we should emphatize and not symphatize. Hope I get my message across! Goodluck!
