why abuse your kids and destroy their future?

i am talking about abuse not spanking here. why do people feel the need to have children and then abuse them throughout their childhood by beating them and making their world a living hell and then use the excuse that the child deserved it? i do believe that hitting your children can only have devestating effects on them as human beings.in the uk we have such a problem with children living in fear of their own parents that the nspcc has been overloaded with cases and they struggle to keep going with the little funding they have. i myself find it hard to even raise my vioce to my son and i would never dream of hurting him in such a cold and callous way. how do you feel about this and do you find it far better to talk to your children than resort to physical abuse as a punishment?
