Margie--
Your Saluki is beautiful...But if you're an SIU fan, you know dog is spelled DAWG...
Our Dawgs made the Sweet Sixteen...guess that's not too shabby!

I've been owned by Salukis since 1980. :-) The Saluki is the oldest breed of dog in the world, originating in the middle east. There are carvings of Salukis in archeology as far back in time as the Sumerian empire. In the middle east they still are used to hunt "meat for the pot" ... often desert hare, but at one time they also were used on gazelle (one of their other names is Gazelle Hound).
They come in both feathered coat (smooth on body, long fringes on ears and tail, sometimes on the backs of the legs and thighs) and smooth (no feathering at all), and many different color combinations.
I currently have two Salukis. Pascha is 12 years old, a feathered black-fringed fawn male. Kai is going on five, and is "tricolor" (black and tan like a Doberman, with white on his chest, toes, and tail-tip). He's also feathered.
If you'd like to learn more about Salukis, feel free to visit the website of our breed rescue group, STOLA, at www.stola.org.

While it's already been said, a Saluki, is a very sleek, long haired dog...sort of like a long haired greyhound. Beautiful and graceful, with wonderfully silky soft hair.
