I feel that there must be a balanced of both responding and starting of discussions. The reason behind starting a discussion is because others have not started that particular topic you want to ask or talk about. There may be similar discussions, but maybe you did not see it. Hence you started a new discussion. I cant tolerate people who want to start a discussion because he/she feels that it will allow them to earn more. By the way, similar discussions are being monitored by the admin team anyways, those who just posts new discussion tread for the sakes of posting will probably be deducted of their ratings or unqualified for any earnings at all. Yes, they deserve it.
In terms of responding, i feel that we should contribute what we can to certain discussions to express our opinions and views. I also cant tolerate posters who just post one liners for the sakes of posting. It disgust me.

Responding others is better, because the others' inputs may help you come out with still better ideas. In the process you are learning (and earning) more and more.
When you a start a topic, you are confined to your ideas only. It is like batting first in a cricket one-day match, where you a set target to opposite team.
In responding, you are flooded with others' ideas too. You can develop greater way.
Your topic may not attract other, but your responses may effectively do that.
