Does the google web accelerator work?

I downloaded a web accelerator from google and have got some unexpected results, according to my knowledge it really slowed my usual rate of surfing(the web pages take more time to appear), though it says that it saved 1-6 seconds. Do you have any suggestions to accelerate my web or do you know of a better web accelerator?
