Do you know what "rule of thumb" really means?

Have you ever used this expression? Someone told me that "rule of thumb" was an old law that meant that a man could beat a woman with an object (stick, pole, etc) as long as it wasn't thicker than your thumb. That way they couldn't do too much damage. Has anyone else heard this?

I havent and i didnt bother look it up. LOL. cause its crazy. good thing it is an old law..
