Why does the idea of gay marriage upset so many people?

I've seen a number of discussion about gay marriage and I've responded to some. The idea is strongly denounced by the religious, claiming that it is an abomination in the eyes of god. Setting the religious aspect aside, I would really like to know why the idea upsets so many people, and what questions and fears it raises? Why do people feel threathened by the idea?

A lot of people believe it is a sin. They also think it is a choice. They are wrong it is not a choice. They are born with these feelings and there is nothing you can do to change it. Some people are afraid that if they accept it they might turn gay also. Then there are people who are afraid of things they don't understand.

because those people who denounce homosexuals are intolerant fundamentalists who have little care for other's feelings and lifestyles. Others are reppressed homosexuals who can't admit to theirselves that they are homosexuals, instead they project their feelings onto others in hurtful ways.

It's the "ick factor." I stole this term directly from exgaywatch.com. It comes down to the fact that straight america associates GLBT people with what they do in bed. THey don't consider that gays are as much what they do sexually as straights are. That is a concept that they can't grasp. TO them, a gay man screws other men and there is nothing else to it. And to them, that thought is, icky. Hense, the Ick Factor. People need to realize that being gay is more than who you sleep with. It's about attraction. It's about who you want to spend your life with. It's about who's going to be with you in your waning years. It's about who's going to be holding your hand when you die. Isn't all this what marraige should really be about?????

Maybe 'couse there are so many people that don't understand how many ways to love there are. The point to focus on with these kind of people i think is that the true love, is when i love the soul of the person, not the body; i can't believe that a so beutifull thing like love can be considered only for the procreation and the prosecution of the human species.
