My mom has Cartoid Artery Disease

She has been told by her doctor that her cartoid ateries are clogged on both sides at 80% and that she requires surgery as soon as possible. I have read about two different procedures, one they have been using for a long time, which involves cutting into the neck and cleaning out the artery from there, and the other is a new procedure that they are unsure of as of yet that actually sounds safer to me where they leave a mesh thing in there to catch any loose plaque. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had one of these procedures, or knows someone who has, and what you may have to say about it. In the end of coarse it is her decision, but I would like to be educated about it so that we can discuss it together. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
